Why don’t more API/ILSAC oils pursue ACEA/Euro approvals?

Yes, the simple answer is: not their target buying audience. But still, it can’t cost that much. I’ve heard that qualifying for the VW 508/509 spec for example is quite cheap. It’s likely too that many of the API/ILSAC oils (especially in 20 grade) already meet many Euro specs, or are super similar. The one oil that comes to mind that actually has been tested to many of those specs is Castrol Edge EP 0w20. SQ, GF7, D1G3, ACEA C6, MB 229.71 and several other Euro specs. It’s actually why I’m going to be using this oil in our Carnival. Having these added approvals don’t make this oil better or worse per se, but it certainly proves it’s capable.

I realize that most people who buy oil aren’t BITOGers and probably don’t care, but it seems that the outlay for pursuing Euro approvals is small compared to the potential marketing benefits.

They would probably just be re-disributing sales. Let's say mobil EP now has 229.71, so people might buy EP instead of ESP. There is a euro approval from every big player already.

Not in 20 grades though. Even the Euro ones are 2.6-2.9.
Seems I said “can” - and I actually read your post … (mention of 20’s)
There have been two answers already - so add dual approvals take time and money so there is not much ROI …

My bad 🙂. One thing positive I can think of though is that carrying some Euro approvals could, for a time, sway buyers from other brands. Like if M1EP starting carrying C6 approval, for example, they could use it to market their product as better since Valvoline, Pennzoil, Quaker State, etc don’t. For a top-tier oil, it might sway some.

Could be - they put allot into knowing the markets - yet we see all of them get it wrong sometimes …
One of the biggest successes we have seen here (VRP) did it without chasing multiple approvals …
On the slip side M1 ESP is well respected by having so many …
Tough business to predict …
