Why doesn't Mobil publish MRV and CCS ?

I called Mobil to find out what the MRV and CCS numbers are for M1 5w20 and I was told those numbers are not published - even internally. So whats the deal ? If there is nothing to hide or be ashamed of then why the secrecy ? I have definitely seen these numbers on other manufacturer's datasheets.

I have always found that M1 site has more info than most other companies.

I guess they dont publish everything. Maybe email them or call? I am sure its not "Top Secret" haha.

They have to test for it. Otherwise, they wouldn't know whether a finished product is a 0w, 5w, 10w, etc.

They've been listening to CATERHAM, I guess; they have HTHS for just about everything now, instead of cold cranking or MRV.

As long as they put VI in the PDS, they really don't need the cold cranking stuff...(or NOAK really)...

I did not understand. If I was comparing two 5w20 oils to see which one has better cold starting properties how does looking at VI help determine that ?
since you mentioned...same question for noak too.

Theoretically, the higher the VI, the less the oil will thicken up as the temperature drops. However, VI is only calculated using the 40C and 100C viscosities, so it doesn't always tell the whole story in extremely low temps due to things like pour point depressants, etc. So no, VI is not a replacement for MRV or CCS. Maybe in places like Australia it doesn't matter, but it does matter in other parts of the world where it gets really cold during winter.

I'll be a conspiracy theorist here. XOM's conventional stuff at least up here hasn't been the greatest, historically, with cold cranking specs. That's why they're hiding them.

I'd prefer they give out the cold cranking stuff, but they are, at least, listing HTHS on more of their sheets these days.

Sarcasm is a difficult thing to convey in prose... Some people might think you actually mean this.

As to the actual MRV and CCS numbers, at least Mobil's data sheets are better than Castrol's, they actually say something other than the minimum requirements of J300.

The last time I downloaded the TDS for M1 0W30 and 0W40, in Sep 2011, the MRV values were shown.

Yeah, I was a bit disappointed in the sarCHASM between my intent and how it was interpreted.

They publish MRV for the 0wXX oils, but not for the rest of their line.
