Why do we let China have anything to do with our FOOD and DRUGS?

Capitalism. USA encouraged companies to outsource and move oversea; specifically to China, claiming how cheap labor and outsourcing will help make consumer goods cheap. Don't think that aged well.
Nothing regulated is straight capitalism. And some Chinese stuff is not that much cheaper, plus consumers need to play their role, not abdicating..........I mean yes I buy some Chinese junk, but not food or drugs.

It was the mentality of the west from the 80's through present that China would just remain as a manufacturer. It was incredibly naive to think it would remain this way. Now the US and others have to slowly metabolize this new reality they created. They stole everything, can manufacture anything and are now a peer competitor in many industries. The only good news is they too have some serious issues they're facing.

Texas is huge with semicon right now. A lot of companies are starting/moving fabs here and I’m all for it.
Me too. The Chips and Science Act was an important piece of legislation. But it takes more; it takes qualified people.
TSMC Arizona has to push their schedule because they could not hire enough local talent. This is a huge problem.
Education is key.

I spent more than 25 years in Semiconductor Manufacturing Equipment. Tough business; critically important.

Xi has potentially ruined China's chances of overtaking the US at least in the next decade.

I agree. I remember learning about globalization and the movement of industries to China in highschool and remember thinking "so we're beholden to China (a country we've already had issues with in Korea and vietnam, and our whole anti-communism movement) for cheap manufacturing and man power....but once they get a taste of wealth or decide to restrict their exports, we'll be back to square 1.

What is your opinion of how much smaller chips can go, Aren't we near the limit of the materials used already?

The pharmaceutical company that I work for is trying to source our raw materials from countries other than China. I've been to China to inspect the manufacturing facilities of our raw materials several times for our primary and second source manufacturers. Some were not up to our (my) standards and we've moved away from them to other suppliers in China. The good suppliers in China have good quality based on my inspections, but there could be nefarious things afoot that I can't find during my inspections. We want to move away from China suppliers for several reasons. FDA (USA) could stop import of Chinese raw materials due to political reasons, lack of general quality oversight by Chinese regulators, generally bad reputation that could cause FDA to stop import of Chinese raw materials until they can conduct a thorough inspection themselves.

My company finds it risky to import from China exclusively and wants USA or EU/UK sourced raw materials. Some of my trips to China were to qualify second sources for our raw materials but my company doesn't want them to be from China so my trips were for naught.

Fermenting antibiotics is dirty business and a lot of the fermentation factories are in China with their the lax environmental controls.

Xi is just the current manager of the decline. It started with the one child policy. Then industrialization in general. Every country that is highly industrialized has birth rates far below replacement. The decline was baked in to the cake from go.

When I saw garlic at Trader Joe’s from China, that kinda scared me. I thought Gilroy, California was the garlic capital of the world?

It’s kind of a myth that California garlic mostly comes from Gilroy. There is some, especially Christopher Ranch. But most California garlic is grown in the Central Valley. However, the Gilroy area has a lot of garlic processing. I heard that even garlic imported from China will often be processed around Gilroy.

Garlic primarily grows in Central California. Gilroy has long been heralded as the “Garlic Capital of the World”. However, in recent years, Fresno County has overtaken Gilroy in terms of the amount of garlic in production.
Still, processing for the majority of the Nation’s garlic takes place in Gilroy, resulting in the pungent aroma of garlic greeting travelers as they pass through the small town. So who really deserves the title of “Garlic Capital of the World”? We’ll let you decide…we’re staying out of it!
