Why do they still use the rubber undercoating on cars?

Do some mechanics get some kind of pleasure from destroying cars by applying the black tar goo / rubberized undercoating to "stop rust"?

This should be illegal. It literally destroys everything.

It's like instant bondo, it covers a number of sins.

A car for sale that was "just undercoated" is like a house with "new vinyl siding." 😁

On an older collectable car that would be a deal killer for me. It makes me wince when I see it done, especially on an already "nice enough car" that someone was trying to make "better".

My 2024 had it straight out the factory. I really don't need it here in this area of Washington, but you can't find a newer truck without it.

Mike are you sure it's not the waxy stuff on your 2024? I don't believe I've ever seen a vehicle roll off the assembly line with the rubbery or Ziebart type stuff.

It’s like anything else.
It is sold because people continue to buy it.
When people stop paying for a product or service, it will go under!

To be honest it does not seem like the waxy stuff. At least it didn't when I put the bed wheel well liners on.

Well, it’s not rubberized, but it is a water-based soundproofing material from ‘Second Skin.’ I had it applied within two months of getting it new, and I think it’s only been in the rain for about an hour since 2017. 🤷‍♂️

You're a man of my heart not driving your car in the rain! What is that beastly looking machine in the picture?

My 1998 F150, that is rust free, would tend to disagree with your view as it came from the factory with it applied.

I recently shopped for a new, used HD pickup. One particular used car operation sprayed the stuff on any northern trucks to cover rust. It would be on the spare tire, caked on the exhaust, suspension parts, etc. The rustier the truck, the more they sprayed.

Dealer walked me over, to a truck, said you might be interested in this one. Low miles, etc. Nope. I don't know who they think they're fooling. Sadly, probably some folks.

But we're not talking about being applied at the factory. These are marketed and applied to cover up and stop existing rust, but makes it worse.

NO it came from the dealership at a price. Ford has never applied this at the factory and never will.
I bought it new, didn't pay anything extra for it and it wasn't listed on the "dealer options" sheet.

Regardless, 26 years later probably 80% of it is still there.
