Why do so many people leave their turning signals on?

When I was younger it was a rare thing to see someone driving with the turn signal left on. I use to think of such people as absolute morons. Now, I see it multiple times, every day. That is not an exaggeration, either.

What happened to people?

As if flashing lights on their dash might mean something, they probably ignore other lights on their dash too.

My 96 Oldsmobile would beep at you if you left it on for several minutes. Guess they stopped going that also?

I stopped using them as a defensive measure.

I'm surprised. People here don't seem to like to use their signals even when warranted, never mind leaving them on.

My '99 Malibu did that to me - scared the heck out of me. I was on a long exit ramp that ended at a traffic light and left the signal on. All of a sudden I heard the chime going off and thought something was wrong with my car.

On a recent summer road trip, I noticed this too!

Between the signal being left on and several abandoned vehicles on the side of the road (hood or fuel doors left open), I'd have swore I was reliving an 80's road trip!

Too many distractions.

This makes perfect sense.
With all the random beeps, bongs and flashing lights integrated into cars regarding inconsequential information, it's hard to not ignore them.

Many are also now leaving 2-3-4 car lengths between themselves, and the car ahead, when stopped at traffic lights these days.
Not really a problem, unless you're the poor sap trying to get into the turn lane that's blocked.

The stereo is what makes the noise in modern vehicles so it gets drowned out easily. The light gets drown out easily with the obnoxious dashboards in vehicles now.

That’s so they don’t hit the car in front of them when Becky rams them from behind while texting.

I leave my turn signals on all the time on purpose. I'm going to turn eventually, right? This way I won't forget.

There were repeated turn signal lights built into front fender corner markers. I always thought they were a smart and useful feature.
Also, the left one (in LHD countries) was connected to a vacuum gauge actuated switch which would alert the driver to a heavy right foot; an outstanding feature.

Bring those back and all will be well with the world.

Distractions, 'click' on modern vehicles seems less obtrusive then it used to be, tell tale isn't as visible on video game instrument panels...
