Why do so many people leave their turning signals on?

When I was younger it was a rare thing to see someone driving with the turn signal left on. I use to think of such people as absolute morons. Now, I see it multiple times, every day. That is not an exaggeration, either.

What happened to people?
The steering cam shuts blinkers off after a turn.

1) They may have bumped it accidentally

3) They signaled a turn then aborted

2) They pushed the lever too far when signaling a lane change

The stoopid car doesn't know enough to turn them off after100 metres !?

My peeve is folks slamming on the brakes without warning for a turn, then turn on indicators after the fact. Maybe.

Kamikaze driving
We have a lot of construction going on locally. ALL of the major north/south routes are under construction. Traffic patterns changing almost daily. Exits that were there for the past 50 years are now gone.

People have developed this habit of just STOPPING dead on the interstate if a traffic change confuses them or they miss their recently removed exit. I don't mean slowly slowing down either; they stand right on the brake pedal at 65 in heavy traffic.

On my Mach E, the turn signal sound is so quiet I do not hear it. I use my turn signals, always. Brakes, not so much, which might explain why my Jetta has the original front brakes at 335K miles. Manual transmission makes that easier and the Mach E and Accord hybrid both have regenerative braking.

You answered your own question...there are now more morons. 👍🏼

Too many distracted drivers who text while driving, music too loud, some even wear headphones when driving, not ear pads but over year phones. Lack of attention when driving is very apparent. Scary thing is when you sit at red light with cars in front and on both sides and a driver behind is coming fast with face in their phone...
I saw people eat a burger, brush teeth, shave while driving, who knows what else they do.

I either can't hear them or I forget to cancel them. I have selective hearing and CHS disease.

I didn't know it until it scared the crap outta me, the Safari has a "you forgot to cancel the turn signal, you idiot", alarm.

I had to adjust the click volume to minimum in the Highlander because my wife finds that knocking sound annoying. This, coming from someone who's first response to anything I say to her is, "huh"?

I stopped using them as a defensive measure.
I didn't do this until I moved to Phila. And many won't understand because Phila is an extreme. But picture if you will, it's July 20, 2024. Driving in Philly is like the Bronx NY in 1977. Complete lawlessness. So there are many times one is best off not using turn signals. Often the response is for other vehicles to accelerate and block the lane change.

Older population. Can't see it hear the turn signal sound as good.
I would almost believe older people use them, and younger do not. For example, people around me parked on a steep incline--wheels straight ahead. Not only would the law be to curb the wheels in NY and CA, but it's sorta common sense.

Maybe there is a younger generation who actually think that turn signals are automatically activated and canceled. Lights, wipers, etc. are all automatic.

Some people drive with their flashers on. "Watch out, here I come - I'm a traffic hazard" or "I reserve the right to make unexpected turns like a Roomba"?
