Why did they come out with CK-4?

I don't understand. Diesels haven't changed much since 2010 as far as I know, so why are they changing it? I can see why they would require a 10w30 as I guess some of the smaller diesels are requiring it, but I believe they've had a 10w30 speced diesel oil for a long tim also.

It may not seem like things have changed but emission regulations have continued to get tighter. When everything is as slow as it is now you have to start working hard for even small gains... hence CK and FA-4.

Yeah, emissions restrictions have gotten tighter. The exhaust coming out the pipe is almost cleaner than the air that went in the intake on modern diesels. Oh, but that isn't enough. Until the exhaust coming out is only nitrogen, oxygen, and small traces of carbon will they be happy.

But on CK-4, because of all this nonsense on diesels, especially EGR, combined with the major move to down speed engines over the last several years, some of which are cruising at 1100 RPM under full gross weights, dealing with the increased heat, oxidation, shearing, etc that is going on in there was motivation for coming up with CK-4.
