Why did Chevron lower the % PEA in their Techron Concentrate Plus

Yes, I'm new here and this subject may have been beaten to death but I have not seen a definitive answer to the question I posted. In my former life I was a research chemist, now retired. The official SDS from Chevron lists the component 01154100-5179P Trade secret 10 - 20% wt. I'm assuming that is PEA. It was a lot higher than that just a few years ago. Some websites that sell it, i.e., NAPA and Autozone, are still using old SDS that list it at 20-25% wt and 30-60% wt.
Is it shrinkflation?? From a Google search I have found that the price of PEA went up in the last quarter of 2023. A 12oz bottle of Techron will now only treat 12 gals of gas.
The % PEA in their High Mileage Fuel System Cleaner is still at 20-25% wt. SDS 12oz will treat 21gals.
Is shrinkflation the answer? Anyone here that works or worked for Chevron know the answer?

I think it’s marketing and maybe a bit of shrinkflation. You give someone a 4oz container and tell them it’ll treat 20 gallons and they’ll be skeptical… water it down, put it in a 12oz container for the same price, have it also treat 20 gallons and suddenly people feel like they’re “getting their monies worth.”

Stupid? Yes. But works… I thought my LG remote felt solid, they put a friggin metal weight in it!

As a chemist you should know that there are various versions of PEA all based on diethylenetriamines and-or tetraethylenepentamines as the basis chemistry.

Just as there are many versions of ZDDP and MoDTC, some versions are more concentrated than others and this offers formulators a wide latitude of formulation possibilities.

Additionally, an SDS is not a formulation script and only gives approximations, especially where trade secrets are involved.

That was the one thing I disliked about Chevron Techron - the small 12gal treatment bottle. They do make a larger one I know but why they even bother with the 12 gal size has to be to make money selling 2 because that small bottle is not gonna work for most people because the average tank size is probably around 18-21 gals in cars and 26-36 in trucks. Add that nobody reads the bottle, they dump one bottle in a 20 gal tank and they just blew their money because that dose won't do much of anything. I only use the Gumout products that treat a 20+ gal tank in one bottle and costs less.

Thanks for the info. I am aware that there are different versions of PEA, and that an SDS is not a formulation especially when components are listed as Trade Secrets and not in specific amounts.
With those facts in mind, I doubt I will ever get a definitive answer to my question.

One other issue is that the results achieved after dumping in a bottle are sometimes vague enough that the consumer can’t notice if a change was made.

Even when things are not listed as trade secrets you still cannot use it as a formulary.

But they do recommend a very high dosage.
1oz/gal at that concentration of PEA is a relatively high concentration of PEA/gal.
The old concentration and dosage recommendation might have been excessively high.

What we do know is that Techron High Mileage Fuel System Cleaner contains more 01154100-5179P Trade secret 20 - 25 %weight ,12oz treats 21gals versus the Techron Complete Fuel System Cleaner, 12oz treats 12gals. Yes, again the SDS is not a formula.
If not already posted they are both BOGO for the 12oz size at Autozone.

the dosage recommendation may have little to do with the PEA in that product...Techron's 1/1 may be more (or less) concentration of PEA than Rislone's .3/1 dosage recommendation...

You seem to be conjecturing that Chevron reduced the percentage of PEA for economic reasons without any proof.

It has been established repeatedly that no one oil company, blender, or formulator is going to give you an answer because of NDAs and IP.

Your comment about "no previous answer" was intriguing. There are 10 pages in the second reference and your posting name is not seen unless you were posting under a different name.

Your posting title, "Why Did Chevron lower the % PEA in their Techron Conentrate Plus" indicates you knew for certain that Chevron did indeed lower their % PEA and then asks why did they lower it.
