Why change the oil? It uses a total fill B4 OCI?

I have two vehicles that consume the total sump capacity inside of 5,000 miles. Other than changing the filter is there really any solid reason the change the oil?

Yeah I know... I already used Auto-Rx in both vehicles with very limited success.

I now use Delo 400 15w-40 in my Civic with a leaking rear main seal. And in my 1985 Toyota with a 22r that get driven extremely hard, pulling my work trailer, I run strictly Mobil 1 15w-50 which has slowed oil consumption noticeably.

This has been asked before. Someone with some math skills posted an algebraic equation that showed you definitely should still be changing your oil. Or, you could just use some common sense and come to the same conclusion. Either way, change it regularly.

The additives likely never get depleted, But contaminates still accumulate. The OCI can likely be extended a bit, But I'd still change it once in a while.

I had a friend who has a Ford F-150 that had the same issue (rear seal leaker). The truck had about 150,000 miles when he stopped changing the oil and just changed the filter twice a year. He sold it with about 280,000 miles. He would put about 12 quarts of oil in per year. BTW, the oil was barely dirty all of the time.

don't think the right math was used on the other example. the oil will eventually hit steady state (pretty soon at that consumption rate). the contaminants are being burned with the oil. while some will transfer, most will be filtered/burned. i would push out to 10k and then change the filter, then do an OA at 15k. would wager it would show you have 5k to go on the oil, which will be completely changed by then.

change the filter every 10k and go for it.
