I'm curious as to who's going to deviate from the manufacture's recommended 5w30/10W-30 and use 10W-40. I realise it takes a good amount of courage to do this.
Who's using 10W-40 for the Summer?

My car is burning a fair bit of oil. I'll be trying ramping up the thickness to see what happens. Oil change will be in a week or two, starting with Castrol 5W30 HM, then topping up with 10W30 HM, then I have a few quarts of 15W40 I found on clearance. If it's still burning, I try something else.
I have trouble understanding the purpose for this thread.
1. With gasoline headed back to the plus $3 level, the smart play is to run the thinnest API starburst viscosity for your application.

3. Because he wants to alleviate consumption. Might be willing to sacrifice mileage for a cleaner tailpipe.

I have heard some people on BITOG say they will go up to a 10W-40 during the hot weather months in an effort of gaining added protection through the form of increased film thickness, and I was just wondering how many people do so. I am not advocating or encouraging the use of 10W-40 in any way.
The other reason is to raise awareness of 10W-40 because it is seldom talked about.
I use 15w40 (HDEO) in my Acura Legend year-round.
I don't know how It happened, but I've accumulated 6qts of Pennzoil 10w-40 that I'm going to use next oil change, which should be in 3500 miles or so.

Got 4 cases of Chevron 10w-40 in the garage and 6 qts in the 4.0 jeep.
That's interesting because I'm guessing Acura recommends a thinner oil. Have you had any adverse effects of using 15w40?
Well in my Acura it recommends 5W30 for all conditions and 10W30 for summer conditions, but 5W30 overall preferred, i'm guessing it's the same for the Legend (which is an amazing car, btw!)
I use it in Euro cars when it's too cold for 15w40 and 5w-40 is too expensive or warm. There is a great UOA on a BMW V12 on GTX 10w-40.

Not 10w-40, but I am using 5w-40 in 2 vehicles, and 15w40 in another.
Courage to use 10W40?? I thought I'd seen everyhthing dumb there is on BITOG but this takes the cake. What would it take to run 40W70?

That's what I like to see, Victoria Cross levels of courage to run such incredibly thick oil 10W40. My hat's off to you sir!
One reason to run 10w40 is that you just couldn't pass up a good deal and all they had is 10w40.
I run 10w40 in my pickup year round here in Detroit. It gets down to zero for about a week or so each winter. I did it to the pickup because oil pressure was a tad below spec (5 psi) on 30 weight. With 10w40 I get several psi into the spec range.
The Aerostar 3.0 has been running 30 weight for years and I just boosted it to a 40 weight with VSOT recently to see if consumption will go down. If so, I will continue to run thicker oil. Otherwise, back to 10w30.

I frequently use 5w-40 in my truck during summer months, manufacturer recommends 10w-40 however in high heat climates.
i have some Chevron Supreme 10W-30 and 40 in the garage and it'll go in the Galant this summer...but it'll be mixed with some ST 5W-20!
of course, this is after my ARX treatments...taking compression readings and i don't want anyone to say the compression increased because of the thicker oil...right now i'm running ST 5w30 for the testing.
