Maybe just a badluck but I used GTX 5w30 in my new Montana 2002 for 2 oil changed following the OLM and I noticed some varnish build up on my dipstick , furthermore I saw on both occasions some black deposit at the bottom of the jug.

After that I started to use either canadian tire oil or pennzoil. I cleaned the stick and the varnish never showed up again.

What the? What are you talking about? Not calling you a liar, but I've NEVER heard anyone ever say this about Castrol. Anyone else ever notice this issue with Castrol GTX and varnish and/or black deposits in the bottom of the jug?

I never heard GTX was subject to varnishing. I thought it was one the "cleanest" oils.

Ok Pat!

Lookie here...

Part one.

BTW: Timed the whole oil change.

2 mins to get car on ramps.
5 mins to hook up suredrain into container and drain all the oil out.
3 mins to change out old oil fiter with prefilled new one (filled with new oil while waiting for drain)
2 mins to take off suredain and clear up container/old filter.
5 mins to add new oil, check level and start up. Check for any leaks and drive off ramps.
2 mins to put ramps back.

So taking my time and making sure no hurry, around 20 mins incl everything.

I'll drop off the used oil at work in the tank.

I'll also be getting a TBN with the UOA Pat so we can see how the next oil change we be. (I'm going to run 2 OCIs with GTX so we can make sure for some of the members here who think doing a UOA right after using another brand messes up with UOAs.. I disagree but we will make everyone happy.)

I think you'll agree that if my chain Toyota engine does ok with GTX, your belt Honda engine would do better...

Take care, Bill

Geez...maybe I should just go back to the "red headed stepchild" (Valvoline All Climate). Everyone says it has a week additive package, but I've never heard of Val A/C causing varnish or deposits within a reasonable OCI.

Thanks again Bill! How long do you figure it'll take you to run through those two intervals?

lets see... About 3-4 months unless I get crazy and take some vacation time..

I'll keep you informed. I'm seeing that the more miles the car gets put on it, the harder the wife drives it...

She starts it up and takes off, does the 30 mph shift into first since she is coming up to a stop sign

and you make comment and watchout!

Oh well, I should go find another automatic car for her like a Taurus Station wagon. She loved the last one.

Take care, bill

Your wife sounds exactly like mine! She'll start up her car on the coldest day of the year and within a minute she's pulling onto the main road and hitting 5000rpm in first gear!

I almost think I should start "pre-warming" up her car for her sometimes, by taking it on a short drive before she drives it!

Maybe the OLM was the problem. Perhaps it's just another sign that these extended drains the OLM is allowing goes to show that conventional oil needs to be changed on a shorter, non-OLM oci.... (???)

I'm on my third OCI of GTX in my 2002 Cavalier. Only reason I'm using it is b/c the garage I have been going to for repairs..etc.. has a killer price on oil changes using GTX: $15.95 for 10W-30, and $20.95 for 5W-30, and they use NAPA Gold filters, as opposed to FRAM clones. Great deal!

As far as how the oil performs, I have to say it is working great - car is very smooth on the GTX, and there is absolutely no consumption at all. With other oils, it was a half to a whole litre per 6,000km's, but with the GTX, it is nothing. I know tha's not a lot of cosumption, but to find an oil that takes it to nothing is noteworthy.

Definetly a Castrol fan now......

Why would they charge more for the 5w30 though? It's the same price in the stores! Does it cost them more to pour it in?

I know, I know....there shouldn't be a price difference, but when the price is that low to start, doesn't bother me. They can't be making money on the $15.95 changes....

True, even at $21, that is a very good deal, considering Mr.Lube charges about double that amount for Castrol GTX (with a Kralinator filter, which is the same filter as the NAPA Gold actually)

As if I don't wrestle with different oil strategies in my head enough, now I'm starting to wonder if I should just go straight to GTX 5w20 in the spring, and bypass GTX 5w30 alltogether. With my wife's short trips, I personally think the 5w20 is going to show better results, especially in cold weather. But at the same time, it would be nice to see a few UOAs of each just to prove that point. I just don't know if I want to wait a couple of years for all of that data to come in! Decisions, decisions....

OK, now I think I've officially gone off my rocker.

I'm approaching 3000 miles on the Syntec 5w30 that is in her car right now and I'm now thinking I should just go ahead and change it this weekend and be done with it! Since I have no plans to run Syntec again, I might as well cut this interval short and begin my next phase of testing, even if it's a waste of good synthetic oil to drain it out so soon.

I'm really leaning towards the GTX 5w20 now. Even though this winter has been extremely mild in Toronto, not going below the freezing mark all that often at all, I know we'll get hit with cold weather sooner or later. And that's where I think 5w20 will really show it's stuff.
