Hi all

I purchased 5 litres of Castrol GTX 5w-30 A5 oil from Amazon as it was very cheap for a known brand oil using a "subscribe and save" offer

However, it is not clear to me if this oil is really fully synthetic

The castrol website does not mention this at all - other than one of the pictures on amazon showing fully synthetic

Another trusted reseller here lists it as fully synthetic too (https://www.opieoils.co.uk/p-206064-castrol-gtx-5w-30-a5b5-fully-synthetic-car-engine-oil.aspx) so I am inclined to believe it is

What does everyone think?

TIA

not syn.
Syn GTX is in a different bottle.
I dont see any amazon pics with syn on it.
but amazon is notoriously bad/incorrect with images anyway.

I'm in the UK

I've cancelled the order now as I think it is not what I wanted - thanks all

Plenty of cheap A3/B4 on Opieoils.
You don't need A5/B5 really, what did you pay on amazon?

Also forget fully synthetic, has no actual meaning behind it.

This is a UK product, and the picture linked to above shows "Full Synthetic". Mostly likely a Group-III synthetic.

It's Euro (ACEA) A5/B5 and also Ford 913-D. This Ford spec only exists outside of North America, so many here will not be familiar with it. It's a high SAPS oil, with high TBN (>10) and high ZDDP (~1000 ppm zinc) levels. The high ZDDP levels means it's above the chemical limit for SP and GF-6, even though it's a high quality oil that would almost certainly pass these tests, due to it having already passed the very rigorous A5/B5. This is why it only claims SL and GF-4, more a reflection of API chemistry rules, not oil quality.

The extra ZDDP was added to reduce cam chain wear on some of the Ford light duty diesels used in Europe. Recall A5/B5 is a spec for both petrol/gas engines (A5) and diesel (B5) engines.

Also ZDDP is a powerful LSPI quencher, oil antioxidant, and metal anti-wear additive.

If you don't need a low or mid-SAPS oil (e.g. C2) or a high HTHS oil (e.g. A3/B4) then I very much like oils that carry A5/B5 and Ford 913-D. I have some myself in my oil stash.

Castrol is a good brand, I would happily buy this oil. Yes it's full synthetic.
