I'm in the middle of a 1 yr. OCI on my mazda6, using Amsoil ASM 0w20, and their filter. I'll see how that works out for me.

I was also in the 3,000 mile camp before BITOG. I always bought Castrol GTX and usually AC oil filters.
I then went to 6 months/5,000 miles with "full" synthetics after finding BITOG, and did oil analysis for a couple of years.
Now I have no problem taking conventional to 5,000 miles in mostly highway driving.
My OCI is almost always 6 months, and longest mileage in that interval will be 7,000 miles.
Since BITOG, I now buy all oil and filters on sale, with the exception of the orange ones...

1yr/6500mile oci on my 03 Evolution. Sees very little city driving, 3 track days, and lots of 80mph highway time with 23psi to 8K redline. Running RP 10w30. UOA shows wear below my 5K mile OCIs between 5K and 40K miles on the car. Now at 62K miles.
For my wife's and my 3 vehicles we are on a 5,000 mile or 1 year OCI. Her Explorer 4.6 is driven on the highway more so she reaches 5,000 miles around every 4 months. She uses Motorcraft 5W-20 and now LC20. My '96 Contour is driven locally 60% of the time at least 10+ miles each way. My '02 F-150 with the 4.6 is driven locally 80% at 10+ miles each way. The '96 Contour uses Schaeffer's 5w30 Supreme Blend, SL variety, with LC20. The F-150 uses Motorcraft 5W-20 and LC20. The oil filters in the Explorer and F-150 are Motorcafts. The Contour is now using Napa Gold and has a Mobil 1 waiting for the next change.
I have a Terry Dyson UOA kit that I need to use. Most likely I'll do an UOA of the F-150.

10,000 mile oil drain intervals on the '96 Volvo 850 turbo 160,000 miles (Schaeffer syn blend 15w40) and the '01 Tundra 85,000 miles (Schaeffer syn blend 5w30). Excellent oil analysis reports every time I pull a sample at that mileage (about every third oil change). I'm using OEM Mann oil filters on for Volvo for the full interval, and OE Denso filters on the Toyota for the full interval.
I'm thinking about going with 3X a year Mobil 1 0w30 changes in my car rather than the 4x I am doing, even though I have the oil stashed already. My driving is down signifigantly. I'll probally be about 6000 miles. For teh wife, pretty much sticking with 4x a year on PZ SUV Blend and then some Shell I have stocked. She drives about the same miles as I do, but her vehicle is 10 years oil, plus I have to use the basic closeout oil in something.
I got 316,000 hard miles out of a 350 in a K20 Suburban changing the oil every 3000. The mechanic that installed my new engine in the Sub recommended the same thing considering where I live and work. 3000 miles with dino for me.

I'm starting into year two of my current OCI on SSO. I thought I better check the oil for the first time in 6 months or so. It was down almost 1/4 qt at 12,800 miles. I added 1/2 quart, because I felt like babying her. I might swap the filter in April 09 or so.
I'm following the manufacturer's recommendations which is 5000 miles on our 06 Mazda 3 (2.3 L) and the OLM in our 07 Honda CR-V (currently 7500 miles with 30% life left). This is with conventional oils.
I have been using the dealer for the last year or so when I lost access to a car lift, but have decided to start doing them in my garage again. I need to finally get rid of the remaining 5 jugs of 5W-20 GTX I purchased on sale two years ago when 5W-20 cost a premium. I may move to a syn after that. One thing I will avoid is doing them in the winter. I will bring it in if I fell that I cannot extend the OCI any longer.

I used to be a 3000 mile changer but just went 6300 miles with a change on my Yukon based on the OLM in my Yukon. That is a big difference to me as it cuts my oil use in half. Running Pennzoil Platinum 5w30. I would probably go 7500 but I have a 100k engine warranty and the dealer said never go past the OLM 0% or I could have a warranty denial if I have an engine problem. AFter 100k miles I will go to 7500 and do a used oil analysis. One GMC dealer told me I could go 10,000 on Mobil 1 if I use a Mobil 1 filter.
Roger Wilco on that one. I drained some PP once out of the Sunfire @ three months with less than 2K miles. Mind you, that was due to aftermarket warranty reasons...
Just got done a 6000 km run of Esso XD-3 15w40 in my GM 3.1L V6 after re-doing the lower intake gaskets. A 'flush' oil I guess, and dirt cheap too.
Just went back to Esso XD-3 0w30 Full Synthetic today -- couldn't put it off any longer because its snowing now and getting below freezing. Hope to get at least 56,000km/4 years like I did last time (before the leaking gaskets necessitated changing the oil).

I have a much better understanding of oil since hanging out here on and off since 2003 but I still have a pretty set interval of around 4-5k miles on both my cars. I can't really go much further in either, though, given it takes the CR-V a LONG time to hit 5k miles and the 9-5 is, well, it's a 9-5...
Honestly, I'd prefer the fun of changing oil more often than using something exotic and extending drains to cover the cost.
My new Subaru will go the usual 7500 mile intervals. This is requested by the manual. I do 32,000+ miles a year. I am going to extend it to 10K after this winter. I am using Pennzoil Platinum 5w-40 European Formula. I know this oil will do 10K easily. i will wait until the spring to switch to this interval. After this stash runs out, I am going to switch to Rotella T Synthetic 5w-40. The price ofoil is getting a little rediculous in my opinion.
My Durango 4.7 litre will continue with the 5k mile OCI's. Castrol GTX 5w30(5 quarts), Castrol SYNTEC 5w30 (2 quarts). This mix has served her well and I will continue it as the oil is well priced for me. (Plus, I have a LARGE stash from Wally's when it was $9.95 a 5 quart jug!!)

Used to do 1 year/15k miles on ASM on my civic, then switched to xlm 6 months/7500 miles on my crv. On my new forester I've been changing it every 3k during break in and started my first run of PP and will now start my regular regiment of 6/months 5k - 7k miles. Could I extend it further? Probably, but the dealer keeps reminding me to keep a log of oil changes because they will indeed ask for them if there are any engine issues.
