Got married and bought a house this year. Looks like I'll be getting ~8 grand back. I'm going to pay off the car and get some landscaping done. The remainder will be invested.

Several years ago NC delayed refund checks for a few weeks to cover a shortfall of funds, the predictable thing happened, many folks, (including me), adjusted our witholding % to end up owing a few $$ at the next tax time. The state had problems making revenue projections that year. They have been quite prompt getting the refunds out since then.

I still have not received my AL state refund. I will never again pay to e-file a return with AL. It's been 17 days since my return was accepted, and they can't send me MY MONEY!? Unacceptable!

OK, new message from IRS (this is the third unique message, from Where's My Refund)--

"Your tax refund is scheduled to be direct deposited on February 20, 2009. If your refund is not credited to your account by February 25, 2009, check with your bank to find out if it has been received. Please wait until February 25, 2009 before you contact us again because we are unable to take any action until then."

I filed and it was received over 30 days ago.

Same message here...

I mailed both my Fed and state returns today. If they're so broke they can't get my refunds to me swiftly, then I'll look into readjusting my withholding, as others have mentioned, so I'll owe 50-60 bucks in 2010 . . . and then I'll wait until the day before the deadline to file. Mwahaha!

I'll get about 5500 total back. I'm using mine to help get outta debt. There will be no credit card debt and the wife's car will be mostly paid for. I hope to have the rest of it paid by the time we go on vacation this summer. Then the only debt I will have will be my new truck (I wouldn't have bought that had I known about the great depression being right around the corner, because there wasn't anything wrong with my Dodge).

I'm seeing it. The Feds say they're not delaying refunds like some states are, but they are. Some of the first returns I did this year (in late January), people haven't received their federal refunds. All we do is direct deposit because the last few years, people would receive their refund within days after their return was cleared.

Everyone should adjust their withholding this year so they owe a little at the end. If you can estimate your earnings, you can nail it pretty good.

Don't pay the taxman

Dear IRS,

I am sorry to inform you that I will not be able to pay taxes owed April 15, but all is not lost.

I have paid these taxes: accounts receivable tax, building permit tax, CDL tax, cigarette tax, corporate income tax, dog license tax, federal income tax, unemployment tax, gasoline tax, hunting license tax, fishing license tax, waterfowl stamp tax, inheritance tax, inventory tax, liquor tax, luxury tax, Medicare tax, city, school and county property tax (up 33 percent last four years), real estate tax, Social Security tax, road usage tax, toll road tax, state and city sales tax, recreational vehicle tax, state franchise tax, state unemployment tax, telephone federal excise tax, telephone federal state and local surcharge tax, telephone minimum usage surcharge tax, telephone state and local tax, utility tax, vehicle license registration tax, capital gains tax, lease severance tax, oil and gas assessment tax, Colorado property tax, Texas, Colorado, Wyoming, Oklahoma and New Mexico sales tax, and many more that I can't recall, but I have run out of space and money.

When you do not receive my check April 15, just know that it is an honest mistake. Please treat me the same way you treated Congressmen Charles Rangel, Chris Dodd, Barney Frank and ex-Congressman Tom Daschle and, of course, your boss, Timothy Geithner. No penalties and no interest.

P.S. I will make at least a partial payment as soon as I get my stimulus check.

yours truly, an honest hard working american.

since my wife started her nursing job on 1/26, we setup her paycheck that we pay very little tax on her paycheck. Next year, I will owe taxes, but it's better getting an IOU for a refund next year.

I started to file mine yesterday using Efile and fill in the forms. I thought it was going well and I was almost done. Then it called for the W-2's and 1099's. You have to type in allthe [censored] form them. It could be another hour. You are supposed to be able save it and go back. If I can't go back when I try, back to paper. It won't take any more, I already have the forms in my package.

Got my Fed refund today. Read in the local paper that NC is short on cash and refunds will be late. Gonna have to change my deductions again.........

I used Turbo Tax and filed mine electronically on Feb. 21. I got my Illinois state refund on Feb. 27 and my federal refund on Mar. 2. Both refunds were direct deposit.

My daughter paper filed hers at least a week before I filed mine and she's yet to receive anything.
My son E-filed his the week after mine and so far all he's seen is his state refund.

Even if it's not the cheapest way to go I'm sold on using Turbo Tax and E-filing with direct deposit. Been doing it for years.

I filed via paper, and just checked the "Where's My Refund?" feature on irs.gov. They say my refund's due to be mailed tomorrow. . . .
