Which oils are 'thick or thin' ?

If we get a few more helpers and add more 0W-20, 5W-20, 0W30, 5w30, 0W40, 5W-40 data we could have the start of a pretty useful list, IMHO.

#@$%! i never gave it much thought when it came to the actual science of this stuff...yea yea i know where have i been since joining this forum. Your never too late to learn. At what point would people classify a 30W oil being close to a 40W without being classified as a 40W oil? I was checking out the chart and anything thats over 12.49 cst is considered as a 40W.

That's one of the many reasons why people like Castrol GC 0W-30, it is at the upper end of the 30 weight range when hot, nearly a thin 40 weight....yet when very cold it is in the 0W range.

I suppose I could add the cold cranking data, TBN, UOA links, and the Viscosity Index to this list...but I thought a simple chart of the 40C 100C cSt numbers and HTHS data could be useful.

My thinking is that except for the few premium synthetics left... [ like GC, Redline, Amsoil, to name a few ] it is possible to think that the new Group III synthetics are more like commodities; and price and viscosity may be two of the most important bits of data.

Im sure this has been beaten to death but how good is the new castrol 0W30 compaired to the old 0W30?
 
I still have a mega stash of the original green GC...so I have no first hand experience with the new GC.

My expectation is that it is probably quite good!
