This is for a 4 quart sump, I want to thicken up the Mobil 1 5w30 or 10w30 to a thick 30wt oil. Three options I'm thinking of,

1st- Mix 3 qts of xw-30 w/ Mobil 1 15w50
2nd- Mix 3 qts of xw-30w/ Mobil 1 5w-40
3rd- Mix 4 qts of xw-30 w/ some Valvoline synpower oil treatment.( 1oz/ qt or more?)

This is for my 91 pathfinder w/ 147K miles it runs smooth on the thicker 30 wt oil and I'm only using Mobil 1 cause of pepboys calendar coupons..thanks for any input

Gotta love those Pep Boy coupons. On my last visit I purchased 3 quarts of 5W30 and had 3 free quarts of 15W50 EP. I still have about 6 coupons left.
I put 4 quarts of 5W30 and 1 quart of the 15W50 in my Explorer. I had the same objective as you. To thicken up the 30 weight Mobil 1. I am about 1500 miles into it and the level on the dip stick has not moved at all.

Seriously - I think the logical blend may work. I take it the XW-40 is not on sale as well at PeppyGirls?

I forgot to mention no xw-40 at pepboys. just 5-10w-30 and 15w50 at my local pepboys.

What is wrong with 15W50? You live in Nevada and drive a 1991! I am sure it will handle 15W50! Unless you do mostly short trip driveing just use a thicker oil. If you do not want to go 100% 15W50 go 50/50 and enjoy! I would not waste time trying to thicken it up with an additive. If you want to use the additive for it's increased additive package that is fine but I doubt that one bottle is going to make a thin 30Wt that much thicker. We do not even know what type of VII's are in the Synpower Additive they could be great or they could be cheap. Most people are useing it to spike their additive levels so we do not know to much about it thickening effect over all!

Add some Schaeffer's 132 Moly EP treat. About 1 oz per qt.

Or better yet, buy some Maxlife Synthetic and have a better oil than the M1!!

M1 users, flame suit on

Would love to see a side by side test of Maxlife Synthetic vs Mobil 1 10w30s. Maxlife Synthetic is about 11.5 cSt at 100C. Mobil 1 is about 10 IIRC. I think the Maxlife has a more robust additive package, vs the Mobil 1 having a somewhat more robust base oil (PAO). I'm rooting for the Maxlife Synthetic!
