which oils have such specific properties that you would like to try them out?

Here's my shortlist:
- Gulf formula GMX 5w30 : MB229.5, BMW LL-01 oil with a very low KV40 and KV100, and a 1 on the Harman index!
- Gulf formula GVX 5w30, very similar, but mid-saps and slightly more viscous. Still very thin for a 3.5 HTHS oil though
- Shell Helix Ultra 5w30: one of the last Full saps 30 weights offered here, GTL base and cheap online!
- Total Quartz 9000 Energy 0w-30: gr IV/V oil, similar in viscosity to the SHU 5w-0 but much lower pour point and higher flash point. Less SAPS aswell but technically still just above the mid-saps limit. Similar price to SHU aswell.

and a new addition:

- Electrion Synamax 5w-40: incredible VI of 208. This is likely due to the Ionised vegetable oil used which has a VI of well over 200. At KV100 14.5 cSt it'll have an exceptionally high HTHS viscosity.

Only the Shell and Total are easy to get for me though

Shell Ultra 5w40 (Acea A3/B4) because it produces UOA results that are almost as good as Liqui Moly Synthoil High Tech 5w40 and is cheaper in the EU.
If I was in the US I would be tempted to try one of the Redline oils, as their VOA lists some very interesting additives that might produce lower friction and wear. Alas their products are too expensive in the EU.

Yes, a Redline oil change is very expensive.

But to be fair, you can get them from opieoils etc for a price similar to what you pay retail for mobil or castrol or whatever the dealer puts in during maintenance.

Good question Jetronic;

I've been watching used oil analysis from my LML Dmax, and I'm betting that with SAE40, I can go lower saps.
That means an oil like Delo 100 CF-2 for the summer and 5w40 Duron E November to April.
If I'm employed by October, I will likely trade my daughter's 2013 Toyota in and get her a 2016 1500 GMC/Chev 6.2L.
The factory fill is out @ 1000 km, 0W40 Duron E in year round.
The free oil changes as per usual, will go to charity.
That leaves my son's 2013 1500 5.3L, 5W40 same as the Dmax winter
and 15W40 for the summer.
I was thinking of pulling the DEF/DPF after warranty, but that devalues trade-in. Besides, the emission equipment has a 160K Km 7 year warranty.
Without the DPF, I could go high saps CI-4+ 5w40 winter, and an oil like Delo 400 SAE40 summer. But why, if the engine is happy on low saps?
I guess I'm not much interested in exotic engine oil or advertising fluff. (!)

Shell Helix ultra 5w40 - cheap and available.

Petronas Urania 5w30 Fe-LS - good chunk of PAO, my diesels love it.

Valvoline Synpower 5w40 (full saps)- good oil.

Castrol Magnatec professional 0w-20. The only easy to get 0w-20 on the Danish market. And a VI at 220.

I've been using Red Line and have found it to be very good on long runs with hard use, long runs as in 10K with a Mobil 1 filter every other oil change. This in in a 03 V8 4Runner that is used a lot in the desert on bumpy dirt roads full of ditches and pot holes pulling a heavy trailer. I'll have a used oil analysis coming on the next oil change. This will be at about 160K miles in a few months.

Kendall GT1 Semi-Syn is one of the best "semi-Syn" oils on the market. The Additive pack (the ingredients added to the oil to lessen wear and enhance lubrication properties) is one of the stoutest of any major brand store bought oil. I would recommend highly this oil. It has the highest content of Boron on the market, part of the proprietary Titanium additive package. Phillips66 has the latest advanced refinery technology, a top tier oil.

You keep the Redline oil on for a solid 10K?

That does sound smart, given the cost of the oil.

No problems experienced?

Red Line = Renewable Lubricants?

Looking forward to the used oil analysis. Which flavour are you using?

Mobil 1 Advanced Fuel Economy 0W-20 and Kendall GT-1 0/5W-20 in my gasoline applications. I have not decided fully decided on an HDEO, but Kendall Super-DXa 15w40 SynBlend, Chevron Delo 400 LE 5W-40, and Mobil Delvac 1 ESP 5W-40 are among the favorites thus far.

Is this a serious statement? and so lets say you are employed in October and then lose your job in November. Yet you have a $50000 truck to pay for?

Financial nightmare.

How about if your daughter wants a truck she can pay for it herself...

Mobil I since about 1976/8 ?????. I believe the first Mobil I issue was 5W-20, which I remember a lot of people saying it was too thin. Most vehicles of the era were coming with 10w30.Never had a problem with Mobil I in 40 years and see no need to switch.

Hosteenjorie; Mobil 1 5w20 was too thin for my 76 Yamaha XT500.
The day after I tried it, I had to drain the oil and set the valve lash.
Bryo86; Of course it's a serious statement and I hear the same thing all the time;
"Don't you think it's about time your kids started paying for their own vehicles?"

Problems? No. As stated, friends do this as well, common stuff. The only problem is people telling us that Red Line oil is just for racing and not for street use. They have never used it but they somehow know.

One guy has a bunch of 4X4 pickups he uses to service/build microwave towers in places that are difficult to reach in the deserts or mountains. He buys late model used pickups built by guys who like posing and soon get tired of their jacked up trucks. They have expensive, well engineered setups but he gets them for a song when they fall out of style. He does 6-10K oil change intervals with Red Line 20w-50. Some are converted to natural gas and get 10-15K oil change intervals. And all this for over 10 years. But please don't tell him Red Line is only for racing because it will hurt his feelings. These intervals have been established using used oil analysis and maintenance experience.
