If Ashland had to pay they were held responsible it doesn't matter who dropped the ball a lot of damage was done. Singling out an incident like this as a reason not to buy a companies product is ludicrous.

Consumer resistance like that might do more damage to them than regulatory action, and thus be more likely to keep them on their toes.

That's a bit like trying to prove a negative, but its not hard to name some outstanding screw ups (see above) which was, like, the point.
