Which Oil Filter?

I was running a 94% efficient MC FL-400S, but at less than 3k the oil was black (cold). Spun on a 99% efficient Tough Guard TG3600 without changing the oil, and in a few hundred miles the oil was dark brown (cold) and has stayed that way for over 1k now.

I would not have thought it would have made much difference either, but it has changed my thinking about filter efficiencies. Technically the TG is 6x more efficient than the MC, since it lets through only 1 particle for the Motorcraft's 6 at 20 microns.

Blue, for you I'd suggest the Ultra, best value IMO for what you're looking to do.

The value in the Ultra is the 15,000 miles. If he changes it with each OCI, that is lost.

For my size filter, everything seems much more expensive. The local Pepboys was out of stock, so my BOGO effort was thwarted. I did get to examine the M1 and RP filters since the boxes aren't taped shut at that store. Good looking stuff.

Blue, if Leaky shows good results will you be reconsidering your filter practices?

If I get the 4 Pureones for $10, I will probably use those for the next few years at single OCI rates. After that, I will look at the Ultras or whatever is a good deal at that time. Right now, I would estimate that each oil change will be 9 months or longer. This year will definitely happen before August (6 months), as that is when the truck went into stock at the dealer last year.

I really need to get some vehicles that need more maintenance to satisfy my urge to tinker.

I agree with Hemitom, Motorcraft FL400S is more than adequate for 5-7k OCI without reusing filter, no need for high end filter.

For 7k, any of those filters will work just fine, buy on price.

Depending on price, the Ultra, M1 and BD+ would be overkill for 7k.

blueovalfilter ....

what is your specific OCI; is it 7k miles max?

I'd use whichever you can get for the least cost. While in your mind 7k-ish miles might seem like long distance, the reality is it's not. Especially when 98% highway driving is your plan! If your plan is to run a premium syn, with a premium filter, for 7k highway mile OCIs, then I'm going to have to scream waste!

If you have read any of my post' about using an oil filter twice you would know, IT WILL NEVER HAPPEN!

If that's the case, then get the PureOne and call it a day.

Can't wait.

I just put up one from the xB that was on for 8K-and it is perfect, could have gone 15K easy. But, if you're going to change it anyway, I'd use MC, Puro Classic, or even QS/Pro Line for 5K & pocket the difference!

Or use the MC for 10K and save even more!

I have decided this is what I am going to do. I still have (1) MC filter in stock. Maybe next oil change I will use a FRAM Ultra. (And Mobil Super 5000)

If you engine is clean I don't really see a problem with using the MC for 10k either. Now if it's a grunge monster I'd want a new one at about 5k or so.

Give us a review after its installed!

i have said this before hope it does not trouble you. its just my idea, no proof. i think the number of truly bad filters can be held in one hand. just my idea.
