Which Oil Filter?

I just recently bought some PP at a very good price at WM. I still have (1) MC FL-400s in stock. (Thanx 2010_FX4

My OCI's on this engine were 3-5K miles up to about 88K miles. Since then they have been about 5-7K mile OCI's. I have owned the truck since brand new (6 miles) and I am pretty sure the internal engine is clean.
I was thinking about using a long life oil filter but can't decide which one? I am here all the time reading about filters and have a few in mind. If this were your truck/engine, which filter would you choose? And, what OCI would you do? 98% highway driving.

2) FRAM Ultra
3) Pure One
4) Mobil1
5) Bosch Distance Plus
 
I've tried them all. Pleasantly surprised by the new Fram Ultra. I'm about to take one off that was used twice for 14k+. The oil "looks" visually pleasing. Filter "seems" to have gotten more efficient over the miles. No ticks, no startup noises on the coldest mornings from both engines in my sig. Going to cut the 14k+ one open and post it here in coming month. Can buy them at Walmart.
 
I've decided that I feel better with high efficiency filters that flow well. The Motorcrafts present a great value, but taking advantage of rebates and BOGO can bring to the table some filters that are at a price premium in the market.

I am going out to PepBoys today to see if they will honor the PureOne BOGO that was online for this month. If the BOGO wasn't available and I was shopping on purely everyday price and availability, the FRAM Ultra would be my first choice.

Since you have voiced your concern over using a filter for two OCI, I won't recommend using the Ultra for 2x7500 mile changes. If you are going to do something like a Mobil 1 Extended Performance change, getting a filter to match would make sense (PSL, XG, M1). If you are doing shorter, but slightly longer than what your history shows, all would work great with some being overkill.

The FU is the ONLY FRAM oil filter I like.
 
Same here, why I was pleasantly surprised. Oil looks much cleaner on both engines, never would have thought there was much difference going from 97% @20 to 99% @20. The Camry is going all the way out to 10k for the first time. The oil looks so good I'm letting it go.

For the OCI, 10K is a nice round number, and the PP should be up to the task (heck, the Mobil Super 5000 is going to see 10K in my 5.4L). For filters, up to 10K, the MC still gets my vote; I will be dissecting my current FL-820s when I hit the 10K mark on this current OC (should not be too long now). Past 10K, I think I would go for the Bosch D+ and then the Fram Ultra (in that order), both are available at Walmart for reasonable prices.

FX, if I had not got such a great deal on the PP I was going to go back to Mobil Super 5000. I am very impressed with your used oil analysis using the Mobil Super 5000. BTW, are you still using MC filters with those extended OCI's?

I demonstrated that I have read your posts by saying in my post that I won't recommend doing 2x7500.

I understand your conservatism and I don't disagree with it. I probably won't do such a thing until the warranty has run its course, which will be a long time for me since my truck is just over a month old. If I ever do it, it will be with a filter that explicitly says that it can handle the anticipated mileage and meets the specifications for my engine by being explicitly recommended by the filter manufacturer for it.

When it comes to filters, I believe that changing them too often is just as bad as not changing them enough. Part of this relates back to my preference for high efficiency. If I hadn't seen some threads on BITOG that demonstrated the P1 ability to provide high flow and high efficiency, I would probably have gone straight to the 99% efficient synthetic filters and not looked back.

I wasn't recommending that either. Just passing on info regarding a test born from thoughts rolling around in my head..

..If 3k oil changes are extinct because of advances in oil chemistry, what about the advances in oil filtration? We are using new synthetic extended interval filters like they were the paper predecessor. We extend the oil, but cling to the old paper rules? Are we now using the cellulose/paper filters too long? Or the new synthetic media filters too short? Is one use with a synthetic media filter just right? I dunno, and I'm gonna find out

Yes, I saw that in your reply about my feelings about using an oil filter twice.
But, if in the near future I see more test results from proven source's, stating that this procedure is good to geaux, then I MIGHT consider a (2) OCI on the same filter.

Nothing wrong with PP--I ran Ultra for the first 70K in my FX4. For the MC filters, yes, I am still running them; the FL-820s is good for at least 7,500 (by Ford's own OCI) and I ran one for 6,480 and 8,285 miles here. 10K is only a few more miles (~1,700) so I thought that I would see how it holds up. Thus far, I have not seen any reason to switch to another filter and the price cannot be bested--I think I paid about $2.30 a filter out the door last time at AAP after discount for 15 of them.
 
I'm going to autopsy the 2X OCI 14k+ Ultra off the Camry and the 1X 7,300 OLM OCI Ultra off the GP and post both pics for comparison.

The Camry accumulates miles fast, the filter has 13,500 on it currently. The goal is to come in just under its 15k rating. So thats less than a month, approx 263k.
 
5 to 7k and with no discount prices on the filters, motorcraft hands down. At under 4 bucks I don't think you can find a better filter Especially the FL400s.
 
Purone is best bang for buck n an remarkble filter
Amazon has Mobil 1 Extended Performance $8 so whichever... u will not be disapoointdd.
 
Bosch Distance Plus, the amount of dirt holding capacity alone in my books makes it a long OCI filter (I consider it at par with Amsoil EaO's)! Definitely use this filter for 2 OCI's, if you plan to do OC every 7K miles!
