My dad just bought a 2011 Hyundai Sonata. His model is not the top of the line but is very comfortable, I drove it aprox 450 miles this weekend, it still has under 1000 miles on it, I got tired of watching the gas gauge not move so i pulled over and filled it up after 188 miles of driving and the mpg hand figured was 40.68 mpg. This was strictly freeway,at 70 mph, and country road,60 mph, driving.

On the way home we were closer to the epa sticker of 35 mpg, ringing in 35.9 mpg.

The car has a 4 cylinder engine and it has lots of get up and go, Personally I would have bought the next higher interior package but it was quiet and easy to drive and will seat five folks easily.

Well, this was in response to OP's question that only asked for a car to be "dependable long term." He didn't say anything about having it be fun to drive as well.

New Ford Taraus SHO. Hands down the nicest car I have ever driven. It was very comfortable, quiet, fast, and felt good. I had nothing to complain about on that car. I can't believe they do not advertise this car more!! I don't get it. This car was such a surprise to me!

True Get some auto shows to test it! Magazines to test it! get the word out how good this car is.

This would be my list, in order.
 
Chevy Cruze Eco 6 speed manual.......
If you push on it, it's a "drivers car".
If you don't it'll get 42+ MPG.
Rides well, handles quite well,4 doors,room for 4.
 
If you had told me that I would someday recommend a Ford Taurus, I would have told you you were crazy.
But then the current model came out. Everytime I see one, I'm drawn to it. To my eyes, it's a beautiful sedan.

With a Lexus and a DTS in the fleet, why not an MKS? I prefer the styling of the Taurus though.

Or a nice hybrid MKZ. Mazda6 DNA and hybrid mpg.
 
First suggestion, unless you live in a driveway that is really steep I would recommend not focusing on AWD. With the exception of Subaru. Subaru finally makes excellent MPG vehicles with 2012 Impreza and 2010+ Legacy now.

That being all said and owning two Subaru's I would recommend getting a set of quality winter tires(4) mounted on a set of rims over AWD. The cost of four winter tires over AWD is much less. You get SUPERIOR stopping and turning ability. Lastly your other tires are not wearing down while in storage. Also you can run your all-seasons typically much longer as many become treachorous under 5/32" in winter conditions.

That being all said FWD opens up to so many possibilities I could not suggest one over the other to you. If you want to keep it the longest time make sure you really like the vehicle and don't sacrifice your desires over things like supposed best predicted reliability. I owned a car I really did not like (Civic) over 9yrs/225k miles and it was miserable.
 
THANK YOU rjundi! that is GREAT to think about, snow tires on rims. i did do that for my daughter's 1999 camry, works great. i would not have though of this!!!! i am willing to use tire rack like i did before. also clever to really LIKE the car, if you keep it for a decade, like i do!!! thanks.

2010 low mileage Mercury Grand Marquis..They are going for between 14 and 15K bucks with around 25K miles on them.

2010-2011 Lincoln Town Car..They are some new ones around for sale or you can find a nice low mileage babied Town Car.

Ford Crown Victoria..That also you should be able to find a nice late model one with low babied miles.

New 2011 P71 Ford Police Interceptor..Some dealers that also sell to fleet might be able to hook you up with a new one as Ford made a ton of them before the line shuts down this summer.

I know you said you wanted NEW but threw them in anyway.

You should be able to get 10 years [or more] with just regular maintenance on all those cars..We generally keep our cars for 10 years or more and put between 200-300K miles on them.
