Good morning! thank you ALL for the great advice. to sum up, will keep my 2008 caddy DTS forever. will keep ( or son will ) 2002 lexus 300 forever.

can you suggest a NEW car to buy? any make, any model.

goals: 4 door sedan, not SUV.

DEPENDABLE LONG TERM. i will take super care of this car, now that I know a little about it. if i am to take time and effort to maintain it, it must be WORTH maintaining. goal is for nothing to break for a long long time.

i have never had an all wheel drive, would consider that, winters in Massachusetts.

Kia or Hyundai would be on my very long list. The big three have all got some nice 4 door sedans out there. I would look at Chrysler. That Detroit Iron commercial kinda whats me to look at one. Then there's Nissan,Honda toyota.
 
I wouldn't know what car to buy . Non of the current offerings really turn my head. Happy 4th of July and happy 5,6,7,8,9th of July as well.
 
We own have owned 5 KIA - Hyundai vehicles now with no issues.

Before were avid GM drivers. Had trouble with the last 4 we owned.

KIA - Hyundai set more record sales for June. Their warranty is another +.
 
We love our CTS 4 2009. It might be too low in front to handle the snows you get there. The Lincoln MKS has an awd version and it is SWEET! If you want to get really crazy they make it with awd and twin turbos. This new version looks much better than the ones from just before it. The New awd bigger Caddy to replace the DTS isnt due till after next year. If your not in a rush you might want to hold out for one of those... whatever you decide. Good luck.
 
Audi quickly comes to mind, 4 door sedan and all wheel drive. Then there's also Subaru, which has a great reputation.

Both manufacturers have die hard loyalty.
 
Two cars I would highly recommend are a Toyota Avalon or a Toyota Corolla. We own both and would not hesitate to buy another. The Avalon is extremely quiet and smooth; the Corolla is very dependable and achieves GREAT gas mileage. Give both a look...

Take a look at Ford's line-up. Ford has done much in the past few years to not only lift reliability ratings, but also increase fuel economy. Plus, if you do have a break-down, there are Ford dealers everywhere and parts won't be an absolute fortune. Subarus are good, but the head gasket failure issues still haven't been resolved. I work at our local Subaru dealership in parts and I can vouch for the advantages of AWD and how safe and fuel-efficient Subarus are. If you look at a new Subaru, take a look at the Legacy or Impreza sedan.
 
Get a Subaru Outback! Roomy, utilitarian, all-wheel drive, reliable. Maybe not the prettiest car ever.
 
With a Caddy and a Lexus in the fleet, don't know if you would spring for the Hyundai/Kia. You did not post any budget constraints. I might think you'd go 328xi or Audi A4 route.

Be daring and go for a Dodge Charger R/T AWD.

I've heard a lot of good things about the 2011's. Despite the first year jitters and the promise of a new 8 speed coming soon.

You could look at FWD and RWD and get snow tires.

I drove a FWD Sebring with all-seasons for 3 years in northern Vermont. Never got stuck anywhere except my sloped driveway.
 
Thank you ALL for your thoughts!! I did not put a price range on purpose. That way I can hear what you all really think! My friend got a used Subaru and loves it. It did have that head gasket thing, but his local mechanic fixed it quickly and cheaply. He still loves it. I would consider Subaru. I am afraid of Hyundai, only because of my ignorance. They might be really good. I would not have thought of a dodge charger! My friends do all like their bmw’s. I know nothing about audi. The 2000 buick park avenue I had for 100,000 miles did have a dashboard issue, and steering column issue, and ignition coil pack issues, but I did enjoy it for 8 years. Our 2002 lexus is really quite dependable, not as comfortable. My friends all love their accords.

V6 accord. They have improved the transmissions from earlier models. Find a 6 speed manual if you can, they are fun to drive!
 
The new Subaru Foresters are quite nice, and not cheap if you order a loaded one.

AWD is nice to have in the winter.
