I'd avoid Spectrum brand coconut oil if possible - it just never tasted good to me. Expeller pressed has little to no coconut flavor. EV organic usually has a lot of coconut flavor, which some like, some don't like. If you don't like the brand you got, try a different brand, it'll most likely taste different.

I normally buy the 4L metal containers of EV olive oil and use for all baking etc. But I'm also using grapeseed oil too, not quite as strong as the olive.

I seem to get an impression after reading all the posts that canola and vegetable oil are not much prefferred ? If so what are the reasons for that ? Just trying to educate myself as we do use oil in our cooking...
Thanks.

Quite a few people believe that oils that polymerise (like linseed oil forms linoleum etc.) aren't that good for you.

i.e. if it forms a crust around the bottle top after being in the cupboard for a while.

Other vegetable oils have too much of particular omega fatty acids, and can cause an omega3/6 imbalance.

Anyone heard of or used "SmartBalance" oil ? http://www.smartbalance.com/OilsCookingOil.aspx
Found it at Walmart the other day. Its a blend of CANOLA, SOY and OLIVE. Quoted from their website -

"Use this oil in place of single oils, including canola and olive, for cooking and salads; its natural blend of canola, soy and olive oils provides 1140 mg of Omega-3s per serving. This precise blend of polyunsaturates and monounsaturates helps to balance the saturated fats you consume in meat, fish and dairy foods."

So is there any value to this ? or its just marketing/advertising ?

Blowing wind up your...

They state on their site that they have a healthy balance of omega 6 to omega 3 of 4:1.

It's not a "source"of Omega 3s, in that it's not rectifying the typical western unbalance of 6 to 3.

Personally I wouldn't touch canola or soy oil with a 10' pole.
