Which band is your favorite for their lyrics?

So when it comes to lyrics, what do you guys like best?

1. Straightforward lyrics?
2. Lyrics that are open to interpretation/lyrics that involve thought?

Some songs are straight to the point, while others are not.
For example, take "Every Breath You Take" by The Police. That song was played at a lot of weddings back in the day, but it wasn't an appropriate wedding song. Sting has said as much.
Another example by The Police, is Synchronicity ll". Knowing what synchronicity is, you piece the song together to realize that the main character in the song has a monster awaking in him. What happens at the end of the song is left open, what does he do? The monster has come to the surface and is at the door.
#2 for sure.

Take me, cure me, kill me, bring me home
Every way, every day
I keep on watching us sleep

Relive the old sin of Adam and Eve
Of you and me
Forgive the adoring beast

[Bridge 3]
Redeem me into childhood
Show me myself without the shell
Like the advent of May
I’ll be there when you say
Time to never hold our love

[Chorus 2]
(My fall will...)
My fall will be for you
My love will be in you
You were the one to cut me
So I’ll bleed forever

Resurrecting this, as the lyrics for this song are pretty good (let's see who can guess it, I've omitted the chorus):

Heavy rings on fingers wave
Another star denies the grave
See the nowhere crowd cry the nowhere cheers of honour
Like twisted vines that grow, hide and swallow mansions whole
In the light of an already faded prima donna

*Chorus*

Heavy rings hold cigarettes
Up to lips that time forgets
While the Hollywood sun sets behind your back
And can't the band play on? Just listen they play my song:
Ash to ash, dust to dust, fade to black

*Chorus*

Dance little tin goddess

You made me remember that I don’t know where my, “The Last Waltz” dvd is!
I had the album. Then the DvD I watched 100s of times and now I have even streamed it. One of my go-to things to put playing in the back ground if I am reading or just sitting around. Really felt old hearing Robbie Robertson passed. I think he was the last of them alive.

Garth Hudson is 86 . Never tire of " The Last Waltz " on C.D. or video .

Midnight Rider:
Well, I've got to run to keep from hidin'
And I'm bound to keep on ridin'
And I've got one more silver dollar
But I'm not gonna let 'em catch me, no
Not gonna let 'em catch the midnight rider
And I don't own the clothes I'm wearing
And the road goes on forever
And I've got one more silver dollar
But I'm not gonna let 'em catch me, no
Not gonna let 'em catch the midnight rider
And I've gone by the point of caring
Some old bed I'll soon be sharing
And I've got one more silver dollar
But I'm not gonna let 'em catch me, no
Not gonna let 'em catch the midnight rider
No, I'm not gonna let 'em catch me, no
Not gonna let 'em catch the midnight rider
No, I'm not gonna let 'em catch me, no
I'm not gonna let 'em catch the midnight rider

Written by James Hetfield! ;) I have a WIDE selection of music I like.....

Anything Maynard James Keenan - Tool, A Perfect Circle and Puscifer all have some really clever, deep, and often funny lyrics. He is also an incredible singer who is, unfortunately, best known for the band in which his singing is least featured.

Wings for Marie Part 2 - A song about his mother's 27 years of being paralyzed after suffering a brain aneurysm.

We listen to the tales and romanticize,
How we'd follow the path of the hero.

Boast about the day when the rivers overrun,
How we rise to the height of our halo.

Listen to the tales as we all rationalize,
Our way into the arms of the savior.

Feigning all the trials and the tribulations.
None of us have actually been there,
Not like you...

Ignorant siblings in the congregation.
Gather around spewing sympathy,
Spare me...

None of them can even hold a candle up to you.
Blinded by choice, these hypocrites won't see.

But enough about the collective Judas.
Who could deny you were the one who illuminated
Your little piece of the divine?

And this little light of mine, a gift you passed on to me
I'm gonna let it shine
To guide you safely on your way.

Your way home...

Oh, what are they gonna do when the lights go down?
Without you to guide them all to Zion?
What are they gonna do when the rivers overrun
Other than tremble incessantly?

High is the way,
But our eyes are upon the ground.
You are the light and the way.
They'll only read about.
I only pray heaven knows,
When to lift you out.

10,000 days in the fire is long enough.
You're going home...

You're the only one who can hold your head up high.
Shake your fist at the gates saying,
"I've come home now!
Fetch me the spirit, the son and the father.
Tell them their pillar of faith has ascended.

It's time now!
My time now!
Give me my
Give me my wings!"

Give me my [5x]

Give me my wings

You are the light, the way,
That they will only read about.

Set as I am in my ways and my arrogance.
Burden of proof tossed upon the believers.
You were my witness, my eyes, my evidence,
Judith Marie, unconditional one.

Daylight dims leaving cold fluorescence.
Difficult to see you in this light.
Please forgive this bold suggestion.
Should you see your maker's face tonight,
Look him in the eye.
Look him in the eye and tell him,
"I never lived a lie, never took a life,
But surely saved one.

Hallelujah
It's time for you to bring me home."

What blows my mind is that this was written from the perspective of an older man, reflecting back on his life (and older is 45 lol)

When it seems like the night will last forever

And there's nothing left to do but count the years

When the strings of my heart start to sever

And stones fall from my eyes instead of tears…

Yup, he's fantastic! "The doomed" is on heavy rotation on my playlist, lol.
