Which auto parts store for employment?

I've found it defends mostly on the individual store and it's manager. That being said, I'd put Auto Zone at the bottom. Employees seem to be real young and not well trained. If I were looking for a job at one, I'd probably try Advance first. I've run into some very good people at certain stores. None are going to pay much, but you already know that.

In my area: O'Reilly's, Pep Boys, Autozone, Napa.

After getting unceremoniously booted out my hospitality career (our dept was laid off, then terminated due to a renovation and not brought back. Was there almost 25 years), I'm looking at these places as I have a great CS background and it's auto related.
I know they have low wages, but at this point, I need to do something and may as well work where there is an interest I have. *I'm sort of leaning towards Autozone, but points, ideas, suggestions would be helpful.
Thank you.

Good luck with job search.

@LDM I hear ya! It's messing with me mentally as I don't want to be unemployed, but looking at what I can do and the wages is a real kick in the berries compared to what I used to make and the benefits (seniority and a month vacation).
@Urshurak776 Considering my location, I wouldn't want to be in the open air bays changing oil when it's 115*. But it did come to mind! (y)
@Dave Hess I've tried and run into no's, a certain way of thinking that recently got the boot and can't be talked about on here;), and bad timing. At my age, I think it may be time for a change. Even ex coworkers my age (56) and older are looking for an out as they don't feel appreciated and aren't listened to. As with more and more businesses, it's more about $$$ than anything else, which is backward thinking when you're in the service industry. Especially at the level we're in (4 star resorts). Cutbacks, farming out departments for savings, piling on duties not normally associated with your job and then they wonder why complaints and bad rating go up. But they're still happy about the bottom line! Right now, it is also coming into the part of year where no one is hiring due to summer slowdown. They'll have employees "make-do" until after August. (y)

.........You might check at your local post office. Been to 2 post office in 2 different citys in the last 10 days both were hiring.......
That's surprising to hear. Under threat from E. Musk the USPS announced they are cutting 10,000 jobs, initially by voluntary early retirement.

Best of luck. Laid off after 25 years? That really stinks. Just start applying to places and see what happens. Applying at all dealerships, parts stores and related auto places in your area. Be picky later

Apply at all the places you're interested in. Ageism is a real thing, and it's harder to get a new job as you near retirement age. If your former coworkers are still working, I'd advise them to have another job lined up, before they leave a place where while they don't feel appreciated, they ARE still employed.

It sure is surprising. I've been monitoring the post office job listings for the last four months, and I haven't seen a single job posted other than rural carrier in a 50 mile radius. And the rural carrier positions, not a good or full time job, have been few. There is this myth of all these jobs going unfilled and that no one wants to work. Maybe that was true for awhile during COVID, but not anymore.

If you have a choice - you want to work for a company that is overall doing well. I took a 10 second look at the stocks. O'reilly's and Autozone stock is going up. Genuine Parts Company (Napa parent) is going down. Of course GPC also owns industrial businesses, so it might not be Napa, but still.

I think the Post Office and Costco were excellent suggestions also. I get a post card in my mailbox at least once a month that the post office is hiring.

Apply to all obviously - take the best offer.

There definitely hiring. Unless they have 10,000 managers sitting in an office or something, or Congress passes a law saying they don't deliver 6 days a week (7 if you include packages) then Elon is outa luck.

The skinny is its a hard job. You will likely start at $17 an hour. You might have to work 10 hours a day, 6 days a week - or as mentioned 7 if your driving and have to deliver packages. That is a long day to be on your feet. Turnover is super high - like 80% quit in the first 3 months. Nubes I am sure get the worst route, and apparently everyone get treated like garbage. So if your looking for motivational speeches and coffee bars - not your place apparently.

If you like refusing to accept used motor oil, and smirking when you see the customers’ reactions, here in PA all of them are a good place to work!

All kidding aside why not stay in the field you know? From what I can tell auto parts is no picnic. This is from me observing while standing in line to pay.

Good luck

If you want to work around auto parts and such, and have good CS skills, consider doing the parts delivery for them or a dealership. When I "retired" the second time, I did the dealership parts delivery for a local VW dealership for several months. Got to meet some great people and built lots of customer relationships. Would never go more than a couple days without one of the places I would deliver to offering me a job. Some seemed pretty decent too. Just a thought.

Apologies for the job situation. Try and visualize having to replace wiper blades and batteries in the rain and extreme weather conditions. Most parts places offer that service. Don’t discount being a service advisor at Costco, quick lube stores, or any independent service garage. That gets you in a better paying position right away.

my job search heiarchiy would be similar to my parts hierarchy. Dealer > Oreily > Advance > Autozone. Strongly suspect if you have good customer service and some sense you'd move up relatively quickly at the part stores or a lube place.

I just finished applying for a job at NAPA for this very position! (y) Bonus, it's only about three miles away. I'll definitely have to take the "short trip" precautions even more so if I get it (last commute was about 6.2 one way);). 🤞
