Last independent auto parts store in town...

There's a handful of Indy outlets left on my Island

The kind I remember standing in line with dad as a kid to get 10w40 GTX and a Fram orange filter

I can still taste the burnt hog wash coffee while sitting with him in the '96 Crown Vic cab car he had :D

The Nascar Mr.Goodwrench clock on the wall, those old dingy chairs that haven't had any padding or duck tape since Reagan was in office, the unmistakable scent of Marlboros or De nobili cigars, inappropriate Snap On or Hooters calendar displayed proudly, and the dot matrix receipt printer who's pages would fade out right around the time you needed them for reference

The people behind the counter were often old, staid, and prejudiced against anything new enough to not have points, but they'd eventually get you what you needed at a price that was probably too high

As a child it was interesting, as I got older it stopped being fun, and they all somehow got less competent and more miserable to do business with as the years went by

I want to support my local small business, but you gotta meet me half way on services or attitude or price or inventory

I've been reduced to RockAuto and in store pickup at Advance

The less interaction with people, the smoother the whole process goes these days

Sad, but true

I do know of a few boutique specialists that are fun to drop in on and talk to, I've got a place on Queens Blvd that will cater to your Lada or Trabants every need, 6 volt points and condenser is off the shelf, he restores former USSR and eastern european vehicles

There's a guy in Middle Village that has all old NOS V.A.G parts for the K-Jetronic era cars, there's always a Vanagon Westfalia or 5000 on the lift

There was a Saab savant on Atlantic Ave, he always had the DIS coil cassette in stock you needed

I think Ramsey Peugeot in Jersey finally shut it's doors, but maybe he'll reopen now that Peugeot will be back in 2023?

One near me closed down last year, and I said good riddance. It was a father/son run place, but they were known for being rude and condescending, especially if you owned a foreign car.

Sounds a lot like the carquest we had before it shut down.... If it wasn't for a Chevy pickup then they probably didn't have it and acted like it was a bother. Very grouchy. Then you would get a lecture "that's the problem with these little foreign cars, the parts all come from overseas, it takes forever" It made no sense in context.

Never mind the lecture I received was in regards to a vehicle made right here in Indiana and when it was new was one of the most American vehicles you could buy.

I am trying so hard to support our last old school auto parts store, which is a NAPA. Its hard because I am no longer impressed with NAPA gold parts as I used to be, and the last time I went in to get a battery the price they charged was higher than the price quoted on the phone when I ordered it. This has happened a few times now.

The last few parts I needed I got from rock auto, of course there was a better price and a selection of brands you can pick from. But walking in to the old NAPA invokes so much nostalgia for me, it still has the old parts store smell minus the smoke, I really want places like it to survive but they are making it hard at this particular Napa for me to support them.

I don't have any around here. The smallest is KOI Auto Parts. But I'm happy with their service and thrilled beyond belief with the SilentStop brake parts I've bought in the past 5 months. Really amazing.

There was one store in Fremont, CA I found by accident that had almost everything ACDelco. Don't remember the name. But over the years I bought ACDelco cooling tabs and even an ACDelco 51R battery.
City Auto Supply? I remember them quite fondly - they were an SF fixture before gentrification took over SoMA and they had two stores in Marin(Mill Valley and San Rafael) as well in Oakland. They are still around - just in San Leandro and South City.
