Do parts stores accept rebuildable cores anymore?

Shipping is expensive these days . Auto parts stores normally have their own delivery truck that is going back to the warehouse empty so the cost to get the core back is nothing. The warehouse sorts the cores and returns via truck to the re- manufacturer so that cost is low
No other way is cost effective.

I might be wrong, but I remember seeing "core return requires" or something on an item on rackauto, and i did not purchase it since I didn't have anything to return (it was more of an upgrade for my calipers, rather than exact replacement).
So what i understand is, you always have the option of not returning the core back as long as you forego the return value?

The issue with RockAuto is the cost of shipping. RockAuto allows you to get a prepaid shipping label from them for a fraction of the cost if you brought the package to USPS or UPS store.

We only give core credit for items bought here. Our DMS has to link the refund to the purchase. I mean I could force it I guess, but I like having a job. Besides to get the credit the part would have to be in Ford or Mazda packaging with a legible label.

In the system, the core return needs to be associated with a purchase of said part, so no proper way to do core return of an item purchased elsewhere.

Also for returns, you aren’t supposed to just send random extra stuff. There is a list of items the DC expects back. Sending different stuff will result in a discrepancy which is no good. So just donating the items to the store doesn’t do any good, it just causes issues.

Take your stuff to a junkyard or maybe scrap?

Core charges of 40-50K? Im calling BS on that.
Yes, for sure. We're talking about equipment that just the heat exchanger packages are most then every car I've owned cost.
Last 988s we got at work were 1.2 million each, and that was in 2018, so I'm sure has gone up.

They usually only take cores on rebuilt parts you bought from them

If you bought a rebuilt alternator from them, and they charged you a core charge, and you return the core in the same box, they will take it and refund the core charge. Otherwise, they usually don't.

Sometimes there is a time limit on core returns.

Depending on how long she has worked at that store, she might not have seen a core return or a core charge since all-new parts are getting more popular these days.
Advance Auto has really cracked down on the core and parts return. I had a water pump for my cavalier that I must have bought six months ago or so, but can't find the receipt. My water pump started leaking. Thinking it was the one for my car but didn't fit and was shaped different. Thinking it was for the 2.4. Advance Auto according to the sales guy kicks the information out of their system after a certain time.

Items for older vehicles are getting harder to find now that we've moved to online shopping. Most places don't want anything back because of the cost of shipping. Nobody makes a new brake booster for an 05 Ram 1500 and when I found one they didn't want the old one back. I couldn't even find a place to buy the rubber diaphragm to fix it. Same with radiator gaskets and plastic tanks, nobody sells rebuild kits anymore. You just buy a new one and trash the old one.

Just bought a new water pump for my truck for less than $50 on scamazon, no core charge and it was identical to the one I bought a few years ago at advanced for close to $150. All these parts are coming from the same Mexican or Chinese factories.

Sometimes Amazon branded stuff is good Sometimes it's complete junk. My dad ordered $35 a piece fuel injectors for my cavalier. I told him the only way Amazon can sell fuel injectors for $35 is slave labor. Every other fuel injector was $150-$290. The GM oem were almost $300 a piece. The Amazon injectors never ran right.

I found that some of those "rebuilt " injectors are nothing more than used junkyard injectors that have been cleaned up. New parts though are only made in a few factories and are the same as OEM. I bought a $50 fuel pump on ebay instead of the OEM for my jeep and the plastic moulding and parts were identical. Even down to a blemish on the plastic it was identical to the OEM part that was hundreds of dollars. You just never know until you get the parts. It's a gamble for sure.

AZ still collects my old water pump when they warrant it, but they no longer warrant or collect my electric motors. This coincided with new motors being sourced from the mainland. Fortunately, the new product has proved more reliable than the reman motors. So it was not a total loss.

It's an accounting headache for stores to take them and rebuilders to take them. You should be able to find a core supply outfit that would take them....

Just google "automotive core supply" in your area. Here's one that I used to deal with, but they're not in TX. https://coresupply.com/
