Dealers stealing wheels and tires

My friend just bought 2025 Toyota Tacoma. He’s all about being seen. He bought one of the trucks on the lot that the dealer installed a lift kit, and aftermarket wheels and tires. I asked him where is he storing the takeoff wheels and tires. He said the dealer didn’t give him those. I told him the wheels and tires that came on the truck from the factory is yours. Those are part of the truck and is included in the specs. Just another reason to hate dealers. Those dealer spec upgraded vehicles are so overpriced with markups. My local Subaru dealers were throwing on wheels and tires, lift kits, roof top baskets, and charging $6K markup.

I will tell you what happens with the OE parts in this case. They get dumped on the parts department to store "for when we might need them in the future" and after a certain amount of time they will be dismounted and tires tossed in junk tires and the wheels in the scrap bin.
I have a magic curb that does both - best day is Sunday 😷

Did he specify what he wanted done with the OEM wheels? I'm going to wait for this answer........... Then we can discuss the topic you started. I will be checking in until you do.

Plenty of new take offs for sale on marketplace and other sites. Nobody is scrapping them.

The point being is that those who work for dealers say they don't keep them in quantity. Which makes perfect sense. Is somebody getting them out of the scrap pile on reselling them on FB? Likely - since many of those resales on FB don't own the vehicle that the wheels came with-it's been my experience.

To be clear, I think the title is misleading.
Dealers may be keeping wheels and tires, but they are not "stealing" them.
The possession of the tires and wheels is to be negotiated at the table.

To be clear-there is so much dealer hate on this forum that you get threads like this that are total unmitigated, ill-informed, garbage nonsense.

That's my favorite thing to do, especially with trucks. I haven't gotten a set for the F150 yet, but I picked up a brand new set of Chrome Lariat wheels and tires for the Ranger when I had it for something like $400. You can't buy a set of truck tires for $400, and then I'll sell the wheels when I'm done to make it even cheaper.

People are always trying to get rid of brand new wheels/tires because they put big stupid wheels and tires on their trucks.

I bought a set of 17” steel wheels that were factory new and had been pulled from a new RAV4 before it was sold. For an extra $20 I bought a set of Toyota wheel covers that were still in the shrink wrap. They were listed on FB Marketplace and I met the guy at a storage unit. He had at least three more identical sets that I could see. Either he worked for a Toyota dealership or he had hijacked a shipment.

Do they ever offer to sell them to the public or employees?

Some dealers have the room and motivation do sell take-offs or stock them for people. Room is an issue for us and its usually sales that dreams these things up and then dumps them on parts with no consultation.

No ability to sell them someplace as take offs? (I sort of get why a dealer may not want to engage in this)

Edit - didn't see your above post before I asked!

Last time I bought wheels for my then new car (2013/2014!) the cheapest I could find OEM steelies was ebay from someone that is presumably in the business of upgrades and then reselling the take off stuff. Shipping and the steelies, TPMS sensors (and with the OEM tires) all in was only slightly less or more than what I could get steelies and TPMS locally.
