Which 0w-20 Full Synthetic?

OK, you want to make it run a long time. That means taking the long view. The first thing I'd do is filter research. Look for the filter thread and gasket diameter needed to fit the Honda. Look to see if there is room to go to a longer filter w/o ground clearance issues, etc.

I'd get a longer/bigger premium filter and fit that (Wix, Napa Gold (same) or Baldwin, etc.). The reason is because with extra media, the cold start oil flow will be better. Less resistance and it might not open the bypass, so all the oil, even VT cold oil, will go through the filter media

Then I'd be looking at oil. If the Honda wants 0W-20 - so be it. I'd prolly use Pennzoil Ultra, but Mobil1 would be fine, as would other name brands. Honda motors are not too hard on oil, so I'd avoid the boutique oils and their high prices.

If you are short tripping it and it does not get hot for long, I'd change it spring and fall. It's only a few qts and it gives you a chance to look all over at the bottom of the car. If you get it up to temp for 1/2 hour at a time, maybe once a year or whatever the OLM says

Keep receipts and write it down in the Owners Manual in the back. Good records are important IF there is a warranty issue...

I can say the same for the QSUD 0w20 in my Ford Focus (runs very quiet and runs smoothly). Was previously running M-1 0w20 AFE.

I've seen several recommendations for QSUD 0W20. I've been running QSUD 5W30 in my old Toyota Tacoma and Hyundai Santa Fe that call for that grade. I do 7500 miles intervals on those vehicles. However, I recently acquired a Toyota Highlander with the 3.5L that calls for 0W20 every 10,000 miles. Is the consensus that QSUD 0W20 will do 10K mile OCIs in a Toyota?

I saw that, too. If you buy three one-gallon jugs it's $66.88 with free shipping. When expressed as the cost of 5 quarts - to compare to a jug of M1 at Wal Mart - it's $27.87 per 5 quarts. With no sales tax that's not bad at all.

I am seeking advice on which is best for my new Honda Civic.
I am open to recommendations but currently thinking of buying either Genuine Honda or Idemitsu.
Does one have more Moly?
Use any of the major brands and you will never notice any difference in the life of your engine.

Ive been using QSUD 0w-20 that I got on clearance a few years back. Ive run it in several different vehicles and have been very impressed with it. I feel it performs just as well as M1 0w-20.

Ditto....I switched over to QSUD 0w20 from M-1 0w20AFE.....and found my engine runs QUIETER and smoother. Very satisfied with the results.

Carlsberg, is your Civic the new body style?

I bought my/our first Honda in 2013, a new Pilot EX-L for my wife. Honda's are great cars and their engines appear to be realative "easy" on oil.

My question to you is if the new Civic's have Direct Injection? Supposed DI engines ate a little "harder on oil " for various reasons.

Fortunately for us that are OCD about oil related subjects, Honda only specs a certain weight (0w-20 API SN) and not a manufacturer spec like GM's "Dexos" or how VW-BMW-Merc etc have in-house specs.

Therefore, I've used different 0w-20 Synthetics in our Honda. I changed the factory fill early around the 60% mark on the MM I think. I've used NAPA Synthetic (blended by Ashland & almost identical to Valvoline Synpower), Mobil 1 Syn and M1-EP.

The NAPA Syn I got when it went on sale for $3.00/qt. I scored a lot of M1-EP last year from AutoZone's clearance at $2/qt. For filters, I've used Fram Tough Guard (their midrange) and M1 Synthetic media filters. I've got some K&N oil filters from RockAuto.com but I haven't used them yet. Although the Pilot's manual states filter changes "every other OCI", I have put on new filters every OCI except the last time I used an M1 filter.

I do not go past 0% on the MM. I document everything in the maintenance book incase there is a future warranty issue and save receipts. I'd recommend the same for you.

Although my Pilots's and your Civic's engines are different, they are both Honda's and purchased new with warranties.

Online, you can find decent prices on Honda 0w-20 Full Syn oils from different Honda dealers and HANDA.com (Honda and Acura parts source) . A Honda dealer whose name I forget in California has good prices on Honda fluids and accessories, as does College Hills Honda where I bought my Honda Care 8/120k $0 deductible from for the absolute lowest price in the nation. Many good sources online for Honda OEM fluids and filters.

If you have access to Wal Marts, 5-qt jugs of M1-EP, Pennz Platinum and Castrol Edge would be my choices and recommendation to you in that order. Also at WalMart, Fram Tough Guard filters if changing every OCI, or upgrade to Fran Ultra for filter changes at every other OCI (if your Civic's manual recommends it).

Im not familiar with the Idemitsu, so I have no comment on it. The QSUD I'm sure is great also, especially if DEXOS approved. I have no experience with it so I can't comment on it.

Personally, I don't get caught up in the ppm of Moly in the oil. Check out the "Virgin Oil Analysis" section of BITOG and I'm sure Moly ppm's will be listed for different 0w-20's.

Good luck with your new Civic. Let us know what you decide.

Islandvic,
Thanks for all of that information. I appreciate the help and suggestions.
The Civic has the new body style. I like it very much. I believe the engine is "port injected".
I am getting 37 mpg city and 40 highway (using eco mode).

You're welcome. Happy Festivus, you know, for the restofus.

About the dexos1 spec for 0w-20 full synthetics, you're going to meet or exceed that spec with just about any you find. Its nice to have the official dexos1 tests run on the oil, yes, yet you'd be fine with any 0w-20 full synthetic.
