Which 0w-20 Full Synthetic?

What oil is being advertised in your Honda dealer? Went to our local Honda dealer to buy genuine Honda power steering fluid and brake fluid. I was surprised to see a Pennzoil Platinum ad on the service counter in the Parts department. They were offering it as the premium oil change. Not sure what oil they use if the customer tells them they just want a basic oil change. I was surprised because I thought they would be promoting genuine Honda oil.
 
Find a NAPA $3.49/qt 0w20 Syn sale and stock up. For the Honda's 4 qt-ish capacity, that is $14 in oil per change.

And the VOA for NAPA and RP are about the same... ummmmm

Right, because Royal Purple is going to make even a brand new Honda Civic run smoother and quieter. Must be incredible stuff.

I put Royal Purple 5w40 in a brand new Audi A6 with 15,000 miles on the clock and it did make the car run smoother and quieter. So yes I believe it can.

If claims of "smoother and quieter" aren't from the butt dyno then I don't know where they are from.

Ear dyno?

Yes ear dyno. I remember the first time I used Royal Purple oil and my ears could not believe that it sounded quieter. This was on a 2006 Lexus ES330 which was already quiet to begin with. Yes I'll trust my ear dyno.

Every car I've ever put new oil into feels/sounds smoother and quieter. Are you saying it didn't sound that way for you when you used a different brand?

That is a 0w-20 from a company with vast engineering resources. They do it right. Most name brands appear to work well.

Pennzoil Platinum could "stand out" if you believe the GTL basestocks are better than most. I'm not sure it really matters. No evidence. Its good oil because it passes relevant specs. You might be able to get some for free if you send a Personal Message PM to genafishbeck on this forum, maybe they are still giving the stuff away for free, maybe not.

Some 0w-20's stand out, based on the evidence (not 'ear/butt dynos' or other mindless pseudo-reasons). Mazda 0w-20 and Kendall GT-1 0w-20 (maybe best price from mail order at http://petroleumservicecompany.com/1057222.html ). Kendall has extra titanium for anti-wear that others don't have. The Mazda has extra moly and is high VI.

One note, I've never noticed much if any difference in any oil brand's performance on UOAs. You could say Amsoil SS and Mobil1 EP retain TBN better than most, but thats all I've noticed. Again, when reading about oils, demand some sort of evidence, something to go on, not just blind brand loyalty.

Buy the oil that meets your specs and is the cheapest. Stock up on sales/rebates, then you don't have to fret about "best", as cheapest is much more objective.
 
Hondas aren't typically really picky about oil.
Use whatever you can get a decent deal on.
You've missed the dirt cheap AMIR deal on M1 AFE, but it's usually available for a reasonable price anyway.
I'd recommend rather the M1 or QSUD or PP, but Magnatech would also be perfectly fine and might be the value leader.
Of course, some of the store brand 0W-20s are priced as low as $2.79/qt and are API SN oils that meet every recommendation that Honda asks.
This engine probably won't care much one way or the other.
Vote with your wallet.

M-1 AFE or QSUD 0W20. You can save a few $$$ on The QSUD (at WM) over M-1. Both are top-shelf, quality motor oils.

Lexus' are known to be quiet cars and my car was pretty quiet to begin with. I didn't think it could get any smoother or quieter as people who sat in the car would always remark as to how quiet the cabin was. Then I changed to Royal Purple and it actually ran quieter and even I was surprised.

Very good oil choice. Ran it in my 2010 impala. Doing my malibu's first oil change next week and plan on useing some PP 0w20.
 
I have been using M1 0-20 AFE for several years at 10K OCIs in both Ford. Both engines perform very well, show no sign of varnish, and show no sign of of engine wear.
 
Whichever of these is the cheapest at Walmart will more than suffice:

Mobil 1 AFE
Pennzoil Platinum
Castrol Edge
Quaker State Ultimate Durability
Kendall GT-1 (available online through Petroleum Service Company)

Though I have more experience with AFE, I have used all 5 of these oils in various family vehicles with great results.

I run whatever major company is doing a mail in rebate.

Last time it was quaker state full syn 0w20, had a 10 dollar mail in rebate on it (5 quart jug).
