Where is my Differential Leaking?

Could over greasing the slip joint cause this?
No. You would see thick grease in a circle pattern around the slip joint.

I don’t see any leakage from the yoke/shaft side.

Looks like the clamshell gasket? I don’t know what it’s called OR your diff breather is venting oil.

Not yet. Just trying to come down from the brake cleaner fluid high at the moment. I used 1 1/2 cans. The Red Stuff.

Gonna take it out for a spin and come back pretty quick. Just started my colonoscopy prep 2 hours ago and my wife told me to not get
too far away from a toilet.

That is next on my list. Thanks!
The prep is the worst part. The anesthesia is great! A wonderful nap.

Actually doing both ends. Doc is gonna fix my Zenkers Diverticulum at the same time. Surely they will use different “tubes” and wash their hands between procedures. Well, thinking about it, it won’t matter if they start at the biggest hole.

Gotta get up at 3am and do my last quart of Miralax mix.

I think I’ll go and get a light and check out my rear end beford I go to bed. I’m anxious to see what it looks like after I’ve wire brushed and rinsed it with brake cleaner.

$40 USD on RockAuto. No colonoscopy photos please.

Clean it with degreaser and a stiff brush, maybe some brake cleaner. Only way to really identify where it's coming from.
This.

Except drive down a dusty dirt road afterwards. Might help show where fresh oil is coming from

With as crusty as that rear diff 'cover' is, I think you'll find that it has rusted through. Usually the rust-through is where the bracket for the E-brake cable is welded on. This is fairly common on Toyota trucks that have lived in a highly corrosive environment, and have been neglected as far as washing the salt off is concerned. That's why those weld-on 'covers' exist from several sources.

It's not a hard job, for someone with the tools and skill.

I checked the fill today and it is full. Barely drips out when I remove the filler plug. So that relieves some pressure.
Got the vent tube coming from Modern Toyota in Winston Salem. I'll swap that out and see what things look like after that.
Brake Cleaner doesn't really do a lot in removing the Amsoil 75w/90 from the housing. I wish I knew something more powerful.
And I used the CRC Red Can. 1 and a half cans.

But waking up was a little difficult. I thought my wife was a nurse.

My stomach hurts when I cough and my upper lip is swollen. Maybe I need to get the video.

Oven cleaner works best on gear oil in my experience. Brake parts cleaner doesnt work great on it. Dawn Powerwash foaming soap works well as well. Would not be the first Toyota truck with a rusted out cover. Cover can be welded on in truck but the housing needs to be stripped bare to clean up after cutting and welding. Good time to replace axle bearings and seals as well.

Sorry, sounds like you had both an upper and lower G.I?

My doc uses propofol. Easy to see how Michael Jackson became dependent. I usually get annoyed when the anesthesiologist brings me around, lol.

Hope you're feeling back to normal, soon.

Oil Drip pan under the unit kerosene in gator aide squirt bottle and a bristle brush.
I like mine rear end oily though, unless I am doing a restoration
Don't be breathing in those spray cleaners !

Sure did.

OK. Update. Drove 4 Runner about 5 hours after "cleaning". It is wet again. I've been procrastinating seeing how it maybe difficult
to get the new breather tube installed.

Anyways, as I was removing the old breather tube, I heard my rear end poot. poooffff.... Wouldn't that point to the old breather tube
not functioning properly? It was an audible poof that even I could hear.

I finally got the new OEM installed and will attempt to do another rear end cleanup and drive it to Winston Salem and Greensboro tomorrow. Me and the Apple Store have an appointment and my HVAC Blower Motor Resistor will be ready for pick up.

Well, it wasn't the breather.
