Quote:
A scathing new report by a congressional watchdog panel blames the Treasury Department for failing to track how banks are spending taxpayer money provided through the government's $700 billion financial rescue package, also known as the Troubled Asset Relief Program, or TARP.

The panel, which has been charged with overseeing TARP and is led by Harvard Law professor Elizabeth Warren, said in its report that it "still does not know what the banks are doing with taxpayer money."

By investing in banks that have refused "to provide any accounting of how they are using taxpayer money," the Treasury Department has "eroded" public confidence, the report stated.

The panel also asked whether the Treasury Department, which has allocated more than $350 billion from the rescue package so far, failed to comply with Congress' instructions to tackle the country's foreclosure crisis.

The department took "no steps to use any of [the $700 billion rescue package] to alleviate the foreclosure crisis," and that "raises questions about whether Treasury has complied with Congress' intent that Treasury develop a 'plan that seeks to maximize assistance for homeowners,'" the report said.

It's good to see that Government is on top things and making sure our grand kid's tax money is being spent well...

It looks like Treasury (Hank Paulson) is bailing out the banks (his buddies) and not Americans who may default on their mortgages. This is more proof that our politicians are not 'looking out' for us.

Paulson is not a politician.

True enough. However, he is appointed by one and confirmed by others and his authority is via that appointment and confirmation.

And the only justice we get is a "scathing report." Yeah, that'll deter the greed, scathing reports... how frightening.

I'll gladly endure being the subject of some scathing reports, if they'll front me a few billion.

Pathetic. If this sort of stuff would have went on in the early days of this nation, a mob would have dragged the greed monger banking execs into the street and lynched them on the spot. But we don't do that anymore. We're more civilized than that. Now we issue scathing reports instead, and have some occasional theatrics in the form of Congressional Hearings and Senate Inquiries, etc. That'll show 'em.

But our politicians on both sides of the aisle handed him $700b

So who is really to blame, Paulson, or the clowns who gave him the money?

Congress is the only one authorized to spend money, and they gave him the money.

I fully agree with you. You've got one person at the head spending the money that doesn't know what he's doing, and you've got a group of 535 other people that don't know what they are doing giving him the money.
Oddly, these same people want another Trillion to spend as they see fit...

And we want them to be in charge of something really important like health care???

Isn't that the truth!

It's funny how American's just love the fact that government steps in and is going to solve the credit crisis and then horrified when banks don't lend the money they were given by the government to do so?

Cracks me up the fact that Americans are so horrified when banks who received TARP money don't lend to stop foreclosures when they were chastised in Senate committe hearings and by the public for lending money to the same borrowers when this whole mess started.

Remember when your dad told you- if you want something done right, do it yourself..? Best advice I've heard yet.

By the way, they are going to take care of every problem you have when you get sick! And no one is gonna force you into the universal healthcare system! Keep on believing the lies.

Well ...he appears to be doing it your way. He's helping wealth. He's not handing out money to the rabble ..he's letting them suffer and squirm (a co-benefit, if I read my Tempest right). The financiers are getting the bennies ..and they're going to bring us to prosperity.

It is just the peons money and they are too dumb to know any better or care or do anything about it. They will reelect us or our buddies anyway. We will get them to worry about NASCAR, Football, who is going to be on Dancing with the Stars. ....

Way too late and will never happen .Only new world order type of people will ever get the press to get elected.I have been aware of what is happening for a long time. We will be in deep doo doo paying back everything. Do not forget the foreign aid and the war in Iraq, Afganistan etc. A whole lot of money for little if no return .
