Hey all first post here!!

Question is I have a 2010 corolla. Manual calls for 5 or 0 w20. I live in NY where temps now at night avg 15 to 20 low at night. At what temp should i consider 0w oil just not sure if that is intended for real artic climates or my temps. Thanks in advance

Justin

Switch it now, then run 0W20 year around. Our last 2 cars (Escort Commuter car and Chevrolet APV 3.1 litre V6 extreme use tow vehicle) ran past 300,000 miles on Mobil 1 0W20.
I have never previously had engines in absolutely like new condition at such high mileage, not burning, leaking or dripping oil, quiet and smooth...... whats not to like?

And, yes, bullet proof winter starting...... on our annual ski vacations, the Canadian Rockies this year..... Revelstoke.

The general consensus will likely be that 0W-20 will always be better, flowing easier at lower temps, but realistically in your conditions a 5W-20 would probably be perfectly fine at those temperatures. It depends if you want to run a 0W-20, which will be synthetic, flow better, and likely last longer in an OCI but cost more, versus a 5W-20 which will be more cost effective.

Thanks for the reply.. I do do a lot of commuting in this car about 160 miles a say so may really try this

Thx again

I have been thinking of this lately in regards to my '11 Corolla. In my stash right now, I have a conglomerate of 5W20 oils and then some PP, 0W20. Before now, I've been performing oil changes with my "oldest" oil, as in, the earliest manufacturer date that can be assumed, but lately I've been thinking that with my car only wearing with age, that 0W20 would be the best choice now when tolerances and clearances are as small as they will ever be and in the future, with anticipated wear, switch to 5W20. Honestly, it's all about start-up and with my habit of low, slow RPM's at start-up, I think I'm fine either way. This leads me to keep my process of using the "oldest" oil first. And when I speak of "old" oil, it's Mobil Clean 5000, 5W20, that I estimate at approximately 3-5 years and some Valvoline at about the same, compared to the PP, 0W20 that was purchased this year. Judge your own habit at start-up and choose accordingly. I'm riding 20,000 miles per year with 5,000 OCI with (2) quarts of Mobil 1, 5W20, (2) quarts of Mobil Clean 5,000, 5W20 and Toyotal OEM oil filter.

A 0W20/30 weight is good for colder climates where you want to get the oil flowing ASAP if you have OHC engines . Of course it helps with cold starts as well .

I only tend to use 0w for winter as its harder to find and costs more.(And better cold properties)
Back to 5w in the summer because of the opposite reasons.

I suggest you use 0w-20 all year round. The operating temperature viscosity will be the same as 5w-20 but it will flow better at startup, which is what you want.

0W-20 is very easy to find as every Toyota, Lexus, Honda, Acura, Mazda, Mitsubishi and Nissan dealer now carries the grade.
And it's not expensive. The Canadian everyday price for the Mobil made Toyota 0W-20 is $5.65/L, the best 20wt oil value in Canada.
