Considering Switching Back From SuperTech To Mobil 1

Where do you get your ESP?

Do you consider ESP one of the best non-boutique motor oils?
I always get my ESP from Canadian Tire and always when it’s on sale (which is quite frequently actually). I think it’s the best off the shelf oil you can buy right now. I started using it back in 2018 in my Corvette and just recently switched my Civic over to it as well

But is there actually anything wrong with ST?
Not really. But as you mentioned it isn’t a particularly great deal these days given the price point of other offers. Throw in name brand rebates and ST offers only convenience and adequate performance when in a pinch or simply looking for a no frills solution on the cheap. So it’s basically got the sure thing barfly before last call status.

I haven't had a used oil analysis done for a long time - I change oil and filter two or three times a year, averaging 5,000 to 10,000 km per change, depending on season and type of driving. All three engines are pretty durable.
Thanks! Good to hear.
Is the Mobil 1 ESP considered to be a superior oil due to its higher PAO content?
ESP is not a single base oil across all of them. Different grades get different base oils. The 0w-30 & 0w-40 Include a higher PAO/Ester blend as an example. While the 5w-30 does not. The ESP is darn good oil though but it's more $$ for you. :cautious:
Is it reasonable to assume the Mobil 1 Advanced Fuel Economy is not really an upgrade over the SuperTech Full Synthetic?
Exactly, Between the two & especially if the ST is the same price or less I'd get the Super Tech Full synthetic all day long. Rebates can get to be a headache if they don't have one when you need oil.

Thanks, good information!

The main reason I was considering switching to Mobil 1 Advanced Fuel Economy was that it's available in 0W-30.

So, my revised plan is to check my stash of Super Tech. I'll likely use any Super Tech 0w20 in the two vehicles (the Mazda5 and Kia Sedona) that don't usually get plugged in. I believe they both call for 5W-20.

I doubt either one is driven far enough in the winter for the oil to hit 100°C.

I'll use up the Super Tech 5W-30 in the 2007 Dodge Grand Caravan. It's parked in our attached garage in the winter, which seldom drops below -10°C.

Once the Super Tech is used up, I'll look for Mobil 1 ESP 0w30 on sale, and try to use that as my "one oil to rule them all".

I have run AFE 0W-30 plenty of times in the past and currently have it in the Carnival for the winter OCI. We can get down to -20F and my vehicles are parked outside.

I know ESP is “better” in comparison but my thought is that for the cold temps and shorter trips, having a lighter 30 is better for the season. Oil temps will be lower and not getting pushed like in the summer with high ambient temps, AC on and longer travels.

Anywho, long story short, pick a 0W-30 and send it :)

Subscribe to the Products Sales Topic if you're not already. ;)
Also, I set up an email notification on Slickdeals as well since that's where many sales are posted.

i just went to the Walmart website and SuperTech full synthetic is still at around $18 for 5 quarts. Their more "Advanced" formula is just $1 more! From doing my own oil testing and validating it with the used oil analysis on here in terms of wear SuperTech and Mobil 1 are the same. There could be a difference with longer OCIs and detergency, but if the SuperTech is changed out before 5000 miles you wont have that problem. No matter what anyone tells me on here Im going to change my oil before 5000 miles in any event whether it be Amsoil or Mobil 1 or Supertech. I will not be taking mine to 20,000 miles.

I was a big user of Supertech and Kirkland, but switched to 5W40 and Warren does not really make a 5W40 API SP thus I looked for 5W40s on sale. Quaker State has a 5W40 API SP for $23. I was able to stock up on Castrol, Mobil 1 and Valvoline 5W40 when they were at or below $24 for 5 quarts. I have quite a bit and the prices on all of those have risen lately...

The used oil analysis I got for SuperTech Advanced showed only a minor decrease in wear and not really a significant difference. If its only a dollar more in price sure I would get that. They even have a high mileage advanced formula.

BTW, Kirkland is the same as SuperTech and when its on sale its $30 for 2 5 quart jugs. Like I said I dont think there is a great difference between Mobil 1 and Warrens 5W30. As for 0W20 I wouldnt put that in anything but thats a whole other topic. :)

I would get ESP 0W-20 or 0W-30 or keep running Super Tech. Get ESP 0W-20 in one car, ESP 0W-30 in another and ST in the third one and compare the cold start and overall engine noise.

I don't like AFE. I used to run 0W-20 for a couple of years and my car burns it more than other oils. I haven't heard anything good for AFE 0W-30 either.

As expected. Blackstone has noted they have observed no statistically significant difference in wear between any oil they have tested. It's not the right tool for that job.

There’s no wear difference between any brand on a used oil analysis.

Blackstones opinion is there is no meaningful difference, but there is a difference.

So for example Amsoil came in #1 for the GM 5.3 V8 at 2.11 parts per million per 1000 miles where as Mobil 1 came in at 2.56.Thats actually an 18% difference.

Blackstone argues whether its 2 ppm or 3 ppm it wont matter. The engine wont care...it wont self destruct. The difference between 2ppm and 3ppm wont matter.

Blackstone even stating an opinion is the worst part of a mediocre report

You’re talking about the difference between 2.11 vs 2.56 parts per 1 million parts…..the margin of error is multiple ppm. Plus a used oil analysis doesn’t show all wear.
