I have 10k miles on the Honda. Car can run on 86 octane if it were available, otherwise it calls for 87, which is what I run. Would you guy's suggest that I run 89 or higher to keep it cleaner? Also, is it time to give it a shot of Redline Fuel System cleaner? I'm thinking 1/3 of a bottle. I believe 1 bottle treats up to 100 gallons. My car only takes about 12 so 1/3 shoud be plenty strong. Last question, are their any negatives of using Shell V-Power (93 Otctane) when my car calls for 87 other then $$?

I've heard, and it's been said here a few times, that running premium in a car that calls for regular can actually induce combustion chamber deposits, especially in cold weather. If you're not hearing any ping on 87, I'd stay with that. I've found that running anything other than 87 in a car designed for 87 will actually DECREASE performance. Octane slows the combustion of gasoline. And octane does not equal greater detergency. Your fuel system/combustion chambers are likely still very clean; if it were me, I'd hold off on the cleaners.

Thanks. Let me ask you this though, does 87 from Shell, which is on that list, have enough detergent or should I go up a grade? Drew I agree and my car does run great on 87 regular.

Buster, the manner in which you maintain your cars might indicate that the cheapest fuel system additive would give as much marginal gain as an expensive one.

You probably need nothing, but probably want to try Redline.

Terry says to use whatever gas and FP, and that you won't have any worries about buildup. I personally use Chevron and FP, and don't have any worries. FP gives me better mileage, so its worth using it to me. I bet that FP would do a good job of keeping your fuel system clean and maintaining the mileage, but the Top Tier fuels may do that on their own.

If I wasn't going to use FP, I'd just stick to Top Tier brands, and use whatever octane the car requires, no higher.

Buster i picked TECHRON at NAPA for 3.99 for 12oz. add this every 8,000 miles and you will keep that fuel system super clean. No need to mail order over hyped cleaners with very little track record of preformace, TECHRON WORKS.

Treating the fuel to prevent buildup is better than shocking your system with a product like techron every 8,000 miles. FP has an extensive track record of over 40 years and proven results with no hype. FP will also lubricate vital fuel system components.

I found it interesting that my 2 favorite gasolines Mobil and Exxon are not listed on the TOP TIER site. In fact of all the brands listed the only one available near me is Shell. Is it true that Mobil and Exxon gasolines don't meet TOP TIER?

If they are not on the list they are not complying with the top tier spec's. Might not be on the list because they only add the detergent additives to their premium gas and this is part of their marketing approach. I like the fact that Quiktrip is a top tier gas and it is the cheapest gas in my area.

I read a response that a guy received from XOM that said their fuels exceed the "top tier" standards. Take this for what it's worth.

I don't know that top tier is not some marketing consortium that you pay for certification?

Does anyone else know?

I have a question:

A) Shell V-Power premium is supposed to have 5x higher amounts of detergent additives, than what I don’t know, but it’s supposed to have a lot.
B) To be certified TT, all grades must meet minimum TT detergency levels.
C) Mid-grade is a blend of premium and regular gas mixed at the pump.

So does that mean that Shell mid-grade would probably have slightly higher detergent levels than other brands of mid-grade?

Not necessarily. If they don't submit to the testing, then it won't be on the list.

buster,
I also believe Terry has posted on here that shocking the system is not as beneficial as using a product like FP60 at every fillup.
Either way, I would probably start using something now especially if you aren't buying gas from one of the Top Tier locations. I would also just run 87 octane.

Shell V-Power Premium has 5x the minimum, legally allowed level of detergent.

The other grades apparently meet the toptier spec, because for a gas company to become top tier all octane ratings must meet its criteria.

Keep life simple. Run 87 octane from the least expensive station you can fine and add FP60. Great combination for cleanliness and trouble free operation.

Keep life even simpler and just go to a top tier station such as Shell regularly and you shouldn't need a fuel additive for many many miles.

Meistersinger ,

This was not true to me. I had been using Premium Shell (high octane) gas for last three and half years paying extra 10 cent for every liter (40 cent for galon) simply in hope of maintaining fuel system and engine clean. My car doesn`t require high octane. But recently when I put fuel cleaners like Amsoil PI/Redline Si-1 and most recently FP60, I notice big difference, something I never experienced for last three years. Engine runs smooth with more responsiveness. Couldn`t be happier. At the same time I realized that premium shell gas, which is called `Pura` in Japan doesn`t keep my engine or fuel system clean as advertized, at least to my expectation. I switched to Shell regular and use FP now. I`m a happy man and smart buyer now.

My personal experience.

Thanks guys for the great responses. I think I'll continue to use Shell 87 octane and use FP.
