I decided to go to Auto Zone for their special and I noticed that most-if not all of the jugs are now labeled 5+ quarts. It reads 5.28qt on the label.
I haven't noticed this at Wal-mart before. Is this something new or specific to Auto Zone stores? My oil change is 5 quarts even, and instead of saving the .28 quarts, I just dumped the whole thing in. What's the reasoning behind giving the customer that extra .28? Is it for filter allowance?

The newer Ford 3.5s take just over 5 quarts. Perhaps the oil manufacturers are preparing for a number of engines that take that amount of oil?

Thats good i like a little over fill anyway..

I was using PP 5w-20 since new but the valve cover has some seepage @ 42k miles, so I am going to run conventional for awhile. I want to see what happens..

or maybe they want to just make one product for North America instead of one for the US and another for Canada and Mexico.

I suspect the reason is that Walmart has exclusive rights to the 5 quart jugs. I've never seen them anyplace else. The 5 liter jug allows AutoZone to get around that and provides better utility/value than 1 gallon jugs.

AutoZone is on a mission to finally convert the US to metric system.

A 5 liter jug is 5.6% larger than a 5 quart jug. The skeptic in me suggests that the U.S. retailer will charge at least 10% more by capitalizing on the customers metric confusion and increasing profit.
