What’s the ultimate road trip car?

I drive a lot more than I should. Mostly rental cars or one of my 3 F150’s. First off, I don’t like trucks or SUV’s. So despite how pleasant my V8 F150 is, I much prefer to be in a big sedan with a big engine, or if I want to be sporty, a late model Mustang GT (which is a great highway car)

the OP’s experience mirrors mine. I like big sedans with a V8. And,,,, sorry, a Prius is downright annoying, harsh and loud on epic trips. There really is something pleasant about a conventional V8 that becomes evident after a long trip.

manufacturers can silence and smooth out all sorts of engines, but it’s not the same.

Beautiful roads with plenty of bends like the Tail of the Dragon? Any proper sportscar or just take a hot hatch.
Long distance trips? Audi A8, BMW 7, Mercedes S class with a DIESEL.

Here is a great car .

i gotta say. i have well over 1.5 million miles on the roads. for me it would be up to the reason for the road trip. and if the kids tagging alone.
over the 4th weekend we did 2300 miles or there abouts in the 19 accord sport 2.0. it's quiet, plenty of power, has nice seats. nice ride and 34 mpg.
a few years ago it would have to be the 08 mega cab dodge, the back seat room for the kid and even dog is absolutely amazing. but only 18 mpg.
so my vote goes to the Accord, even over the bmw 330 we used to own.

Of the vehicles I owned, for cars, my E39 M5. No fatigue driving it 1500Km to the east cost, tons of power, very comfortable seats, good trunk space, wicked handling...etc.

With all the kids in tow though, would be the old Expedition (2002). It was comfortable, had tons of space and would take you through hell and back if that's where you were going. It weathered more ice storms, blizzards and adverse weather than any vehicle we've owned.

I used to commute to Chicago in my 335 sport, running 800-1000 miles per week. Couldn't imagine doing it in a car that isn't as engaging, ergonomic, balanced, stable, and powerful for the miles. All that car wants to do is get across Wisconsin :p The only trips that ever gave me pause were in snow events greater than 6", which realistically happened once. I was able to set up in the unplowed left lane from O'Hare to Rockford and plow it at 75 mph with a new set of snows.

The only car that would be better is a 335d which wouldn't be as thirsty running 90+ mph.

i’ve taken two world-class road trips in my life and on both occasions spent most of my time under a cap in the back of a truck bed. so i will say anything with at least a 6.5 bed and at least a mid-rise truck cap. oh, and a sliding rear window so the guy in the back can hand me a snack when i am driving.

This is a pretty boring answer but my vote goes to the minivan. When we had our Caravan it was always a comfortable drive, lots of space, and decent enough MPG. We took a really memorable trip from Omaha, NE out to Yellowstone National Park in it a few years ago and it was great.

I had a hard time getting out of that Pismo parking lot with my PU. No traction, Empty pickups seemed to be the first vehicle in a ditch when it snows.
I like so many vehicles but something with a long wheelbase and fully loaded. I would like to drive the big Lexus SUV. I bet it's really nice.

from the answers in this thread, it appears most aren’t the type to insist on taking every nasty detour on back country forest roads you can find. some very nice cars listed here, but the best road trips involve traveling on surfaces that barely qualify as a “road!”

Within reason price wise, Last gen (2005) Buick Park Avenue Supercharged Ultra Limited with the optional Gran Touring suspension.
My FIL had a 2005 Park Avenue but wasn't supercharged and that was one nice riding car. Because of that my last three vehicles have been Buicks. I don't get my Lucerne out on the highway much but when I do I'm always amazed how well it rides and handles, I think it would be a nice car to travel in.

Glad to see a couple other minivans on the list. We did 30 some states and MB Canada in a 2002 Voyager (165k miles before I sold that one), then a couple trips in a 2012 Routan, and now, we enjoy running around in our 2014 Town and Country.

Seats are great, space is great and 25-27mpg isn't all that bad either. My only gripe is the cruise control in Chrysler vans sucks.....likes to rubber band on hills.

We toured the Northeastern States in my Altima....which led to our 2014 Town and Country purchase after we rented a minivan for a quick WI vacation. I consider minivans to be the perfect car for comfort, capacity, and mileage.

I believe the '93 LS400 and the '96 Legend I rode in, back in the day, would've been sublime road trip cars. Surely the LS has only gotten better since then.
