What's the point of tailgating?

I have had three people get out of their car and it has never worked out for them. One got knocked out. One actually got out with a bat and went after my wife. His car got [censored] up with his own bat. And the last guy made a fool of himself. The reason i drive with a three foot hitch all the time is for tailgaters. If you cant stop if someone hits their brakes or if it makes you mad you are too close and should back off and learn too drive. You should never be closer than 3 car lengths unless you are at a stop light and then one meter is a good distance. At 55 you should be at least 6 car lengths.

While there is no excuse for tailgating, I will say that drivers that drive far below the posted limit with no conditions that warrant it are asking for it. If you do NOT want to drive the posted limit and there are other drivers following the speed limit pull over to the side of the road, or when a passing area opens up allow the drivers to pass.

One of the most idiotic things I see around here in SC is folks who drive around 10 mph below the posted limit then when a passing zone comes up these ******S speed up, to prevent others from passing, it is all VERY deliberate.

Usually I will give them the evil eye as I pass by them. Well deserved, because it seems as if they want to cause you harm by their actions.

The world needs more people to think like this.

Good morning officer. Would you believe I was just slowing down to avoid running into a very large dead turtle that was crossing the road?

No? I see. I was just slowing down to avoid running into a deer foal that was crossing the road.

The only point of Tailgating is to die. Many bad/distracted drivers on the roads

I think some folks are simply oblivious. It is quite clear when you see an emergency vehicle (police/ambulance) with lights on and they simply sit in the lane.

I agree that extremely slow drivers are just as bad. I am guilty of having tailgated a couple of them. It was not necessarily the right thing to do, but they were being ridiculous about their driving and I couldn't pass them. Tailgating was an absolute last resort. Usually there is a line of cars tailgating a very slow driver. If someone can't operate their car without messing up the flow of traffic, they should have someone else drive them or ride the bus.

I have been tailgated as well by some of the people who have to do 20 over the speed limit around here. I just keep driving like normal, and if I need to brake I hope they are paying attention. If not the trailer hitch should take care of most modern cars. I never brake check anyone, I don't want to intentionally cause a wreck on my end, but I won't take them into consideration if something happens in front of me.

In So Cal, it will be 3-4 vehicles trying to get in these 6 car lengths space at 70-75 MPH.

Agree 100%

I hate those drivers too.

If I was the slower driver(which is not often), I would go the right lane and reduce speed so faster drivers can all pass.

The only time I could not do anything was when I was in the long single exit lane at around speed limit, no where else for me to go other than keep going in the exit lane.

Up here, 1-2 carlengths is normal following distance in heavy traffic. it might still be moving at 60-75mph, but following distances shorten dramatically. I consider myself to be being tailgated when someone is so close I can no longer see their headlights in my rearview mirror, or are feet from my bumper.

A coworks answer to tail gaters is to dump the clutch in his diesel and shoot black soot over their hoods, awesome. Keep a safe distance behind drivers. As long as folks are going the speed limit pass them on the right.

I scared the you know what out of some lady one time. I'm going ten miles an hour over the posted speed. I could barely see the lady's hood behind me. I tapped my brake kinda hard, let's say after that she stayed 100 ft behind me.

I see it all the time and it perplexes me as well.

I'm a fast driver, so unless your going to be REALLY speeding your not going to be running faster than me on a road.

What I think it is, is that they lock onto you than go back to texting. Because when I have let these people pass me they nail the brakes and slow right down. When they are leading its like they are scared.

One guy was ridding me bad when I was doing 40 in a 25. I let him pass and he wouldn't break 30.

You do know that passing on the right is illegal in most states, right?

And that most states have a corresponding law; keep right, except to pass?

Sigh...do you always advocate breaking the law? along with passive-aggressive, antagonistic behaviour like brake checking?

They're using you as a rabbit. If the cops are out, they figure you're the one who'll get nailed. If they are in front, most won't do more than 10 over.

What about the guy camped out in the left lane below the posted speed limit in spite of the signs that indicate "LEFT LANE FOR PASSING ONLY"?

For the record, I'm not passing him. I am travelling at a safe and prudent speed in the right lane. There just happens to be a slower moving vehicle blocking the left lane.

I hate tailgaters who are on my bumper in the left lane. so I figure they want to pass, I move over to the right lane then they proceed to tailgate me in the right lane. This went on for awhile until I decided to slow down. she finally passed me. there wasn't any other cars around us either on a slow sunday afternoon. I don't get why some just have to have a car to follow. I was going almost 10mph over the speed limit too.

She was probably lost and thought you knew the way.

What about him? So he's in the wrong...that doesn't mean it's okay to tailgate him...best thing to do is get away from the situation. Pass him on the right, or back off and wait until he turns or gets off the highway....tailgating for ANY reason is just asking for trouble...
