What's on the shelves...

40-70 ... HTHS galore. Are people using that viscosity in normal passenger cars there?

In the UK we don't have anywhere like that for oil. Where ever you go you're lucky to have a selection of 10 different oils. Those oils will all be PCMOs in 15w40, 10w40, 5w40, 0w40, 5w30, 0w30 and 5w20. And the 5w20 is only just starting to appear on shelves.

If you want a HDEO or a Diesel oil you either have to shop online or go to a truck parts shop.

Wait, why is it 40-70 and not 40w70? Did you read the back of the label to find a disclaimer *this is not a 40w70 oil?

Ther'es 0W16 and 0W20 in there too.

Penrite used to have a "W" on the 30 and 40, but dropped it as there's no J300 W grade higher than 25W.

Similarly, the "70" is "more then 60", and not actually 70.

IIRC, they used to have an 80 that was an inferred grade.

I can imagine the conversation between Supercheap Auto staff when you walk in mate... "Shhh, it's the weird bloke who takes photos of the oil again!"

LOL, Brooke was pretty cas about it...said of course, you do enough for us.

Quite often I'll be wandering and they send a customer up to look for "the bloke with the jeans, flanny, and goatee...He'll help you get the right oil.

(Yesterday's was an oil burning Audi, whose owner didn't get the 5W30 C3 part, and had been running regular ILSAC oils. Given the magnitude of the consumption, steered him away from Edge, and to Magnatec diesel 5W40, which had a buy 7L (a 5 and two singles) for $70)

You might be able to pick up some weekend work there...may as well make some coin dispensing advice!

I'd never really thought about it before, but we sure are spolied for choice with oil here. Probably too many choices to be honest, no wonder people get confused.

HTHS should be over 7...
Yes, people are using these oils, and contrary to BITOG lore, aren't exploding oil filters and wasting bearings.

I've got some of this in the shed...

I use it as an additive, rather than run anything on it.

Engines last just fine, and most everything here is on a 12 month or 15,000km (9200 miles) service schedule. Not too many people are buying a vehicle and driving it until it's done nearly half a million kilometres though...by that time, the car will be on about its 9th owner.

Here, a truck parts shop isn't required, but is one of the advised places, for pricing. They sometimes sell the PCMO at a very sensible price at the same time.

Could anyone cite a car which takes the X-70 oils?

"My, what big containers you have." (Goldilocks)

Do you still have the huge bricks of cigarettes (50, or more?)? There was talk of curtailing their sale.

People use those grades in worn out engines that burn lots of oil.

First pic, a 40W-70 ... not J300 compliant? What's the story on that oil?

That's Atlantic oil...theirs is a lot of "meets or exceeds"...Penrite used the W in the early days but saw the error of their ways.

Atlantic ? We don't get that here. Back before our fuel industry was deregulated, there was an Atlantic fuel brand, it was part of Mobil and got dropped. Do I have to post up the pic of me putting 40-70 in a 2E Corolla again...or check out my Volvo below, on 15W-60...and doing just fine.
