What's in your grease gun???

I took two sections of PVC and made a storage rack, the bottom end caps are not glued so that I can easily clean up pooled grease. The grease seems to separate less and what does leak out is easier to deal with.

Great idea. Next trip to Home Depot I will be picking up the parts to build three of them.
 
Im curious why so many people continue to use a grease that leaks out of the gun? Since switching to texas refinery 880 crown and chassis, and 1 grease gun with paragon 3000, I have not had a drop leak out of the grease gun. Even have a tube of 880 sitting upside down on the shelf for a couple years now... no leakage no drippage no sliding no cracking no pulling away from the tube. Why bother with a grease that saves a couple bucks a year... and loses its oil in storage?

I ditched Mobil1 because of the leaks. The Rotella grease I have in the gun now hasn't leaked at all.

My only grease is Chevron Delo EP #2. A very close second is Mystik JT-6 Hi-Temp.

Although I noticed that as well with Mobil 1 Synthetic, it’s the oil that provides the lubrication; not the carrier. Now if you are telling us Exxon Mobil does not know how to make grease.........
 
When you change greases just make sure that the new is compatible with the old grease. There are charts to check this. I changed from Lithium Complex to Calcium Sulfonate because these have the best moisture resistance along with the Aluminum Complex greases. However the Alu Complex greases were not compatible with the Lithium Complex I used previously. This is for trailer wheel bearings, and marine I/O gimble bearing and u joints.

Snagglefoot, I cannot say if they know how to make a grease. If I have a grease that leaks in storage it does not get the chance to leak in my equipment. Since switching, I have not had to re-replace any steering parts or u-joints on my trucks. I only run them 100k or a little more, so maybe its not far enough to see if the parts or grease is holding up. Lawn mower is 50 years old, factory bearings and bushings and still tight. tractors that old or older. Same with dozers. If the lubricant runs out of the carrier in storage, I will let someone else find out if its any good. But thats just my take

To be honest, the fact you grease it at all is being way ahead of most consumers. I don't think any of us individually can do anything but use the grease we think is best. I have 210,000 miles on my original ball joints on my 3/4 ton using Mobil 1 synthetic( the leaky grease) and Motomaster synthetic ( made by Citgo). Getting back to the question about leaking grease, a person in Texas who stores the grease in their 100 degree F garage might think its too much. However, Mobil is well aware that their leaky synthetic grease is the best grease made in their opinion. It isn't an oversight. Maybe they will have to put in some clay and thicken if up if they find sales drop, but for now, they may be the only company around who knows what they are doing. (Just trying to get a rise from the the others.) Don't like a messy grease gun. So be it. :)

The cobalt is interesting stuff. Base oil viscosity is MUCH higher than typical greases... like the oil is ISO 1000 vs ISO220-320. Because of this, it can’t be used in bearings, I validated that with Valvoline when I was looking at it...

Yes I noticed that too. I would without a doubt use it in bearings if it was available in a tub. The sad part is my grease gun failed after the first use but I used all of the grease so none of that is wasted. Now I have to pay $30 to send the old gun back to have a new one sent to me. But when I get my new one this grease will definitely get used again after I use the Rotella grease and Tractor Supply brand moly grease up.

Yes I bought some Atomic Lube grease from Walmart like you seen in my grease collection picture and it has started to leak so it will be next to be used too.
