My oldest daughters boyfriend has a 2003 Impala 3800 with the 465 trans in it (130k). It says on the trans dipstick DexIII but was wondering if I can use DexVI or if I should just use a Dex-Merc ATF in it?

You should be able to upgrade without an issue.Usually the newer specs are backward compatible.I run ATF+3/+4 in my 1988 Dodge without issue.

Dex VI can be used in any year 4T65E. It is preferred over Dex III as it is at a minimum part synthetic.
Maxlife works very well and is a full synthetic.

05+ I believe.

I don't like VI in our '04 box, because it slips terribly if its 'torqued' during a shift. It also shifts sluggishly and slowly (GM Normal?), but even still at times it's not even smooth doing it.

Dex VI was developed for the 2006+ 6 speed transmissions, but is back spec'd for all previous transmissions as GM no longer licenses Dex III. I would use VI with confidence.

The ONLY application you cannot use DEX6 in an older Dex3 use is in transfer cases. For example, the AWD transfer case in my 2006 Sierra Denali came with DEX3. The replacement to use,per GM, is a gear oil that they sell. I have always used Mobil 1 syn transmission fluid and will continue to use it. I do use the DEX6 in the transmission as it was the factory fill and required spec for it.

YES! As GM released new or updated models, it was around this timefram that DEXRON VI was introduced, IIRC!

I don't know for sure if its just Dex3 or not as I just use Mobil 1 ATF which meets the Dex3 requirement for my transfer case and after 86k miles it still runs perfectly. I change the fluid every 30k miles.

Quote from the Dex6 GM bulletin #04-07-30-037E:

"Any vehicle that previously required DEXRON®-III for a manual transmission or transfer case should now use P/N 88861800. This fluid is labeled Manual Transmission and Transfer Case Fluid."
