What to Pay vs MSRP for 2013 GMC Acadia Denali AW

New car smell?
Have a warranty?
Tow a boat cross country without breaking a sweat?
Put a smile on the owners face every time they open the door, and walk towards it. Heck, neither of your cars would have put a smile on my face when they were brand new, not that the vehicle the OP
s friend is considering would, either.

For 50k dollars, I'm going to the Porsche dealer, and getting that smile I want.

BC.

50k? That's big money for a GMC. Not saying anything is wrong with GMC but depreciation is steep and there's nicer cars in that price range. Pick up a couple year old Tahoe or Yukon and save a ton of cash.

Just because she can doesn't mean it's a smart idea.

I can't imagine being a slave to payments (especially payments like that) for 3 or 4 years. Or is it even longer? Or will she continue the cycle of debt by trading it in for a new one in a couple years?

If you were really a friend you'd be able to convince her what a dumb idea that level of debt is, and she'd purchase something she can actually afford.

The $50,000 car is a crutch for low self-esteem. The person with a $6,000 eleven year old car doesn't have a self image issue and doesn't need to make payments on a $50,000 vehicle to prop themselves up.

More like 7 years, looking at the numbers he provided.

This is an Acadia denali, which is the highest end version of the car they sell. Our traverse is nice, and the Denali Acadia is about another $14k over sticker on ours, and you do get quite a bit in that.

I'm not going to start a war over the whole "not paying in cash means you can't afford it" thing, but there are a lot of options for that money, even within GM. She could get a decent ATS for that price.

It's still insane.

Get a Yukon for that kind of money.

Eh I'm not convinced at this point that for most families the Yukon is a better choice than the traverse. We are really loving the traverse, more than we loved the expedition and we LOVED that expedition.

Still if it was me, and I was spending 50k on a car? I'd look hard at something like an ATS. Or maybe a Buick Regal or something. BMW 3 series. If I had to look at an SUV/CUV for that money...? Hm, the Acadia isn't a bad choice at all but I'd probably look at the Durango first.

Try to talk her into buying at least a 80-90k car, since it would be WAY cooler then a 50k car,

Probably a lot of things. One of which is making the new owner a happy person, and we all should be supportive of that person. The statement was already made that this person has decided that they want to spend the money and that they can spend the money. That should be the end of it.

This is not a Dave Ramsey forum, and no request was made for financial advice. Further, some people have even stated that an expensive car like this is being used as a cure for low self esteem, as if they know this individual personally.

I guess some people really do know it all...

Biscut you can 'impress' your girl by doing some research beforehand so here's some reading material for you: LINK.

I myself am a sucker for buying new but as long as the car is reliable I tend to drive them for 10 years minimum. If I roughly add up the 3 SUVs and 1 CUV I purchased new over the past three decades I could have one sweet fully loaded 2013 Chevy ZR1 today. The recent CUV I purchased was for my wife and let's just say I paid slightly north of the figures you mentioned for the Acadia Denali. My wife is the simple type(drove a $6,000 vehicle most her life) and outstanding wife/mother so she deserved it and on her own two feet could afford a vehicle twice the cost of the CUV, so to the financial naysayers, we can afford it and we sure as heck don't lack self-esteem.

Dang, that's nice. My taxes are like over half that, let alone actual house payment. And I got what I thought was a cheap one for the area!

For starters, my 9 year old car needs work every year to pass inspection. I think it'll be under a grand this year, but who knows. Cheaper yes--but I'd expect a brand new car to go a few years before the inspection blues.

I don't have a self image problem but I sure do have an anxiety problem, when it comes to keeping an older car on the road. That's why I let myself get suckered into another car (truck) payment.

Loooong time girl of mine like best friend type but she's stubborn on this one! She can swing the $650-700 month for it. But I feel its a waste for GMC.

Good call. The new MDX is getting great reviews (IIRC it has always gotten better review than the Acadia), offers a better-performing AWD system, is cheaper (sticker), and as I've been following the owner's forums they are getting a legit 28-29MPG highway which is absolutely unheard-of for an SUV of this size. Good luck!

Any numbers on the 07's trade in value? Mileage and condition on that. If you can get it for $42k minus the trade-in = around $30k I'm thinking. Check out the MDX like you mentioned. My uncle bought one recently and received a great deal on it. Too good to pass up he said. I think it's a 2012 or 13 though.

WOW! A lot of hateraid out there on this one! Believe me boys, I'm with you in soooo many ways. I'm not dropping a dime on this just helping her get the price down from 52k is all.

Make no mistake, she has a great job, works very hard, and for her this is what she wants as her family car. She has 2 kids and when not in her company car takes the big ride out for family get aways and such.

She wasn't very good with investments - but has always saved very well. We worked out a much better structure for her investments and she is well ahead of the retirement savings game. She is 36 and will need to work til 55. She has enough stashed that if I gave you the numbers you would probably have her at 45-48 years of age planning on 55 retirement.

She likes the darn Acadia and wants the bling. What can I say?? I'm hoping she falls in love with the Acura MDX 2014 model. End of day it's her dollars...wasted on Acadia I feel but it's her note. And and zero percent I can't even give her much grief on that.

36 and can retire at 55? Nice. I'm the same age and got zilch, plan to work 'till 75. Sounds like she knows what she is doing, and can pull it off.
