What Temperature Is Too Hot For Motor Oil Storage?

I bought 5 quarts of Quaker State 5w30 on sale at K-mart for $2.50 a quart and tossed it on the backseat of my 1998 Lumina. Ummm...it got really hot here. Besides the fires! It is over 100 degrees everyday the last two weeks!

Should I bring the oil inside my apartment until I get time to have it installed? Or is it ok in the heat in the backseat?

Good point.....I once read that 68*F is the optimum storage temp for motor oil.

I think the biggest concern would be the plastic bottle(s) breaking...the sun/heat will break down most cheap plastic bottles...

to BITOG!

My garage sees about 100-110 frequently in the summer here in Houston and I have not had any issues with the bottles (the oil is fine as it will see much higher temperatures in the engine).

My worry for your example in the car would be that a cap would loosen (from the motion of the car) and leak oil on the seat.

Yep, that would certainly be for the bottle's longevity, not for that of the oil.

I've dumped scalding hot used motor oil straight from the engine into motor oil jugs and also plastic milk jugs.

I think I've had a close call with the milk jug starting to melt but not with any "real" motor oil jugs.

I'd worry more about aerosol cans.
