What Synthetic oils have you NOT liked?

Yeah, picking up the phone and having it delivered the next day is so hard.

I buy whatever is on sale. Most all of them are good, but some of my favorites are M1 0w-40 and PP.

Mobil 1-ran it for 15,000 miles in my Ram Hemi-listening to a noisy engine all the time. Changed to RP and virtually no noise. Never used it again and wouldn't for free. Incidently all run on K&N oil filters.

Its called the Hemi Tick. More about the engine than the oil. You will never get rid of it no matter what you use.

But when I bought my Mazda 3 I changed out the oil to Mobil 1 based on past experience. Ran it 3k miles and dumped it. I simply did not like the noise level of the Mobil 1 in this particular engine. Most other oils used since then have kept the engine much quieter.

So for my Mazda application I do not like Mobil 1.

That's odd, I use M1 0-20 in both Duratechs(same as your Mazda) and my engines are very quite.

I didn't like the Castrol 0w-30: More commonly referred to as Green Castrol, or German Castrol. It wasn't worth the extra cost. I also didn't like the Mobil-1 5w30 that came out around 2002. It was the new formulation that is available today. I think it is when they switched to group III. I also don't like Royal Purple because I don't like things that are purple. I don't like Amsoil's 100:1 2 stroke oil.

I really think the SN M1 is less noisy than the SM stuff.

I haven't really used a syn oil I haven't liked.

The only synthetic I didn't like was Mobil 1 5W-20 in my 2007 Chrysler minivan. It was pretty noisy in that engine. And it was the SM version, so maybe there's something to that.

Wrong. M1 was reformulated for SM in around 2005, and then again recently for SN in 2011.

Why do people always think that oil is the same as it was years ago? Oil formulations change all the time. But old wives tales don't, unfortunately.

Oh and regarding the topic, I don't care for QSUD, it made my engine louder on cold mornings.

M1 5w30 in our RDX was noisy as well. PP no odd sounds.

I would love to try SN M1 5w30 in the RDX to see how it goes but pricing of M1 here and my stash of PP is preventing me from fulfilling it.

I've used

Amsoil ASL 5w30
PP 5w30
GC 0w30

No problems with any. I just wouldn't use GC in any 4 cyl unless it was turbo charged as I found it robbed some HP and MPG.

It is when it takes 2 days to get delivered, and I since I don't work at home, I have to wait until delivery is attempted 2 days in a row, then take my attempted delivery notice and drive to the pick-up location, which is further than the place I usually buy my oil.

Who wouldn't want to pay higher prices for such convenience?

You do know that if you have the tracking number you can call up the courier and tell them to hold it at the warehouse without trying to deliver it first, right?

I won't be using Amsoil anymore. I'm also dropping Castrol Edge as well, IMO their change to SN made the oil worse. Trav nailed it with the PDS sheet comments. I'll probably go with PU 5w30 and M1 0W20.

I don't like Autozone, AAP, Oreilly's or PepBoys synthetic oil.

I do like Walmart's synthetic oils.

Sorry guys, somebody had to say it.

I haven't found a brand that I was concerned about. I was running synthetic supertech in 2.5L Wrangler until the priced inched up into Quaker State's price range. I've since switched to QS's synthetic with more of the same positive attributes.

I realize vehicle maintenance is a hobby to everybody here, and I don't have the most popular opinion on the board, but I do believe most OTC motor oil share similar performance attributes, and the difference is practically impossible to prove.

Enjoy the hobby, and understand that simply keeping up on your vehicle's maintenance is something to be proud of. Have fun, and take care.

Yes, the HEMI tick is about something internal to the engine. However, do not discount the fact that certain oil brands actually lessen or increase the noise.

Actually, as someone who has owned 2 HEMI Rams and spent YEARS on the HEMI Ram forums I can assure you that what the gentleman you quoted posted is most likely 100% accurate. There is a long well documented posting history on Ram forums of M1 oil in the 5.7L actually making the tick louder( for most people ) while RP( the SL stuff anyway )making it quieter to the point for some it is no longer evident.

I actually had the tick BAD in my 04 HEMI Ram. When I swapped over to RP the noise went away at least 85-90% worth. I got swapped over to RP sooner in my 08 HEMI Ram and I never had the tick at all( that I could hear ). I have recommended RP to those people who have told me they have the tick and to a person the RP helped to some level with the noise.

Not bashing Mi or starting anything. However, RP has a history of lessening the infamous HEMI tick or even masking it completely.
