What old half ton to seek out

That would be my choice too - any old 4.3 or 350 Chevy C/K, any age. They did sell some with the 305, but not sure if they’re desirable… they maybe the economy of the 8 with the power of the 6 type deal…

Or else a Dodge Ram. I know they can run the distance and still work great in the 94+ version. I don’t know much about the pre-94 dodge rams, but have always liked them and wanted one.

I’ve seen the pre-94 dodge trucks, including some with the slant 6, for really cheap.

I've had a GMT400 305. It was totally fine. Enjoyable to drive around town even when slightly loaded up although it ran out of steam on the highway noticeably quicker than 350 GMT400s. Fuel economy was marginally better, really a minimal difference. I'm not surprised the 350 was so popular... 305 was pretty much pointless. But not bad and thanks to being "undesirable" you can get a deal sometimes.

1991 F150 4x4 SWB reg cab 5.8 auto XLT with off road package baby blue and white lifted with 31 13.50 x 15 swampers and a winch would be my first pick

Second would be a 1993 chevy speced out nearly the same

Followed by a 1992 Ram speced out nearly the same

Lastly a 1984 Jeep J20 with a new LS circa 2003 6.0 drivetrain

If I had my choices 😁

The Chevy had a 3.23 rear end and was a dog! But surprisingly clean underneath. The ford was rusty underneath the rear shackles needs replaced interior was rougher etc but the drivetrain was great some minor seepage but ran good! A lot more enjoyable to drive. Both had some issues to address though. Didn’t pull the trigger on either.

A 3.73:1 would liven it quite a bit, A 4.3L/NV3500 is likely a stripped down value model. I bet a 5.3L/4L60E/3.42:1 would get the same MPG ;)

Bought this today. It is a 3.7 one owner well
Maintained. Does need a wheel bearing other than that no issues. Drives good runs good no leak. Was asking $4200 I paid $3200.
