What oil would you run in a old 4.0 32v V8 Lexus

LS400, one owner, with 188,000 miles. It has been well cared for by a local shop, no smoke, no noises. I'm not sure if these amazing engines have any preferences for oil.

same oil lexus recommend!( if i aint mistaken lexus ask 5w30 so you could put same oil i use . a good oil filter would be a microgreen oil filter ? why because it would clean up debris in the oil in a jiffy ,change it once after a season and you should be good for 10000 mile before next oil change( ya i know microgreen say to only change oil filter but i wouldnt do that to a 188k mile car

188,000 miles is just broken in for a Lexus UZ engine. 6 bolt mains, all the best metals and teflon valve guide seals to name a few. I've seen those engines go 400,000 miles easily without major oil consumption or noises. Unless you are going to run it hard, stick with recommended oil.

What oil has been used - use that. If not, What oil do you like? Use that.
Im grooving on Castrol magnetic SS right now. If its under 1 hp / cu-in use ilsac if over use an ACEA A3/B4 5w30 like a bmw LL-01

I would use any synthetic 5W30 oil and do 7500 mile OCI's... My 2006 LS430 runs like a dream with 90K miles... All the LS's have great drivetrains and I would stay with the recommended oil weights. If you have any oil seepage, then maybe try Mobil 1 HM 5W30. If you want to try a conventional oil, I would try PYB 5W30 or even the HM version.

There are quite a few LS400 owners on here. I would endorse the same 5w30 synthetic recommendation.

I ran M1 5w30 for most of it's life and just recently switched to Valvoline MaxLife Full Syn 5w30

I'm approaching 300k on mine. Every electronic component still works and the AC is the coldest of any car I have ever driven.

It's the same exact color combo. I just brought it home last night. My friend's father bought it new in October of 1994. I have the window sticker, I'm waiting on all the records. The dash has some issues which I can fix with capacitor resoldering. The car needs some TLC, a good interior cleaning and paint correction. But when it needed something mechanical it got it. It had been sitting for a while and the battery was dead. It also had an issue where more than 40% throttle it would almost seem like it shut off momentarily and the check engine light would come on.

I already fixed the throttle issue. I took the intake apart, cleaned the TB and MAF, filled it up with 93, now the car rips. I also charged the battery up (which I think was actually the cause of the throttle issue, driving on dead battery can cause weird problems.) I did not expect it to be so quick, the engine has a great power band.

use any 5w30 that floats your boat.
The issues you need to worry about are not going to be around the motor oil.
I've owned maintained a 1990 for 10years, until uncerimoniously had the engine literally killed (during cash for clunkers).

What you DO need to worry about.

-LCD displays for Radio A/C display go out. The knobs may also wear out and no longer work well.

-in the power train, the VERY most important thing to track down is the Power steering fluid issue. If it was stock will have a quirk with being consumed. The power steering is controlled by air control, and so there will be air valving issue that will be cause the fluid to either leak or be sucked into your vacuum system (or both leak and sucked). This is going to have a huge effect on you as you're basically feeding a small stream of transmission fluid into your vacuum system while it's running, plus fluid is getting all over your engine bay and random other parts and electronic that might short out. This is huge thing to fix compared to the meaningless question of what flavor of 5w30 you want to use.

-suspension including the balljoints or other parts like control arms (A-Arms) that may fail

FYI, there's an episode of wheeler dealers on the LS400 for fun.

You can also google for the powersteering and lcd fixes.

Also be sure to do a drain/fill (or two) of the transmission with T-IV.

Agree with this general recommendation and interval. It was what I did with that engine in the 2uz form and in our V6 Lexus. The Mobil 1 HM 5w30 has given outstanding results in both engines. Use the HM now, don't WAIT for a leak, prevent it. Simple concept. There are other benefits to the HM oil besides just seal-swell for high mileage cars. My next car will be the 4.3L/430. The Toyota filters for it are good and fairly priced if you have a dealer handy. Of course there are excellent aftermarket ones, too.

I 2nd the comments about carefully maintaing the PS system and AT fluid service. It can give remarkable life with periodic maintenance.

I agree with you. I have also done all the fluids in my LS430 and if maintained correctly the car will last for years. I have WS ATF in my vehicle because it is a 2006 and I have already done 3 drain and fills. Also make sure the timing belt, pump, coolant, etc have been done.

If it were me, I'd use Maxlife syn-blend 5w30 and monitor. The seals are getting up in age.

On anything older than 20 years, I add some new ground paths. Soldered #4 cable with soldered lugs from engine to fire-wall, to alternator mount and battery to radiator support and fire-wall. Amazing what clean fresh grounds will do

Your biggest issue would be to make sure it has a fresh timing belt as these are interference motors. These motors will run a million miles if cared for. I've seen some on YouTube with that mileage .

I'm still waiting on the maintenance records, the timing belt has been done twice. There is a Gates sticker under the hood from the last one, plenty of life left. Transmission fluid looks very red. A good bit of the power steering system looks fairly new.

My stumble is back today, it's not a stumble, more like a total temporary cutting out of power. Forums suggest an ECU problem that is resolved with new capacitors. The TRAC light was on all day today, except one start up. Luckily I am a fairly skilled solderer and have a butane iron. I've saved all the rebuild info online for the instrument cluster and ECU.

The car rides and drives well.

No, they are non-interference.

I got the records. 3 inches thick, incredibly meticulous. Everything done by the Lexus dealer up until around 150,000 miles. Lexus used Pennzoil Synthetic per the receipts and the car followed their schedule. It has had so much replaced, coolant, diff and transfluid changes surprisingly often, the PS pump failed at 25,000 and again around 150,000 draining onto the alternator and was all replaced. Suspension parts and 4 shocks/coils, at Lexus around 125k, the bill was close to $6000. If I added up the bills for 20 years of ownership I bet it would be $30,000.
