Winter, temperatures average at coldest -15 degrees, max 60 degrees. Current fill 0w-40. Temperatures not down that far yet.

Need to do a oil change, synthetic user, what synthetic would you run? VSOT included or not?

Mobil 1 0w30 with VSOT or without?
Gold GC 0w30 with VSOT or without?
Mobil 1 5w30 with VSOT or without?

I like group 4 or 5 oils. Recommendations?

Ooooooh. VSOT = good stuff. OTOH SX-UP even better.

VSOT = Valvoline Synpower Oil Treatment, chock full of goodies (see VOA on this site).

I think VSOT would complement Mobil 1 nicely. Of the choices above I would go with the M1 5w30 and half a bottle VSOT. I could not adulterate GC with anything (at least the green GC).

I would try GC and see how it performs in your engine.

The GC by itself would be the GOLD edition as I call it, kinda the ****tier stuff in the GC line, no offense to the elves, but I think dwarves moved in to make the Gold GC.

So if I ran the Gold GC I would deff use VSOT unless directed not to.

Its gonna get cold here, so wouldnt the 0w30 mobil be a better choice over the 5w?

Just my guess.

KJA426 To my understanding the EP Mobil has a weaker additive pack then regular M1, I could be wrong, I thought I remembered reading that on this forum somewere...

Yeah, the EP has a better additive pack than regular M1. EP is SL rated and has higher levels of Zinc, Phosphorus, and Calcium and has 50% more Supersyn according to Mobil.

A couple of thoughts. First, if you're using M1 0w-40, and want to stay closer to that oil's characteristics, then GC should be your call. Remember, GC, though "technically" a 30 wt, is at the top end of the 30 range, at around 12.5 cSt. On the other hand, the M1 products, which are generally great oils too, tend toward the bottom end of the 30 scale, hovering around 10 cSt. This puts them near the 20 wt range. An exception is the "regular" M1 5w30 (non-EP), which per Mobil is above 11 cSt. In short, this is something of an "apples and oranges" thing.

Finally, while I don't think that GC really "needs" any supplementation, I have found that it follows the pattern seen with other oils when LC is used -- primarily that insolubles drop substantially. This can't be a bad thing, but again, no one is going to have a meltdown on plain GC either. I'm using the GC+LC combo in both of our vehicles right now, and I'm very pleased with the results -- very safe, long OCI performance.

Well I went out and made the purchase.

1 Gallon of Mobil 5w30 EP

and in the clearance bin for 2 dollars 3 containers of Valvoline Synpower Oil Treatment for 2.00 dollars! STEAL. Muah, so im gonna change to the 5w30 and add in the VSOT. opinions?

I put Mobil 1 5w30 EP and VSOT in today, with A pureone Oil filter.

What weight do you think the VSOT made it? That shiznite was thick.
