My fiancee' has a 2007 Toyota Corrolla S that she bought brand new. It's seen OCs at an almost religious 3K miles using Castrol GTX 5w30. It has almost 148000 on the odometer, with probably 80% of those miles all high way as she makes an almost hour commute to and from work. I've been trying to get her to use some Pennzoil Conventional or Pennzoil Syn Blend for added wear protection and cleaning, but she's reluctant to switch from GTX. The car will be paid off in June of next year, and we plan to keep it for as long as it runs as inside and out it's in darn good shape. Should we stick with GTX, or give a few others a shot?

If she's pushy bout sticking with GTX, stay with it.. It's a solid oil.. You could try to convince her to stay Castrol and move up to either a high mileage or Full Synthetic Castrol..

I think AZ has a special for a Castrol syn blend right now for like $22. Is GTX good at keeping the engine clean? I really wanna pull those valve covers and take a peek and see how things look.

any quality oil like Castrol or Pennzoil or havoline or supertech (I could keep going) can keep an engine clean as long as the oil changes are done within reasonable mileage.. And every 3k is more than reasonable..

No way she's budging off the 3K mile OCI lol. I told her I would buy the oil if she let ME pick what goes in, and I really want to stick some Pennzoil Syn blend in that engine.

No reason to budge really it won't hurt anything by going only 3k..

And GTX is more than capable of that.. No reason to be pushy and be trying to be dominant on this.. She's atleast maintaining her vehicle with a quality oil and good OCI.. There's more important things to be pushy on in a relationship

I'm not trying to be pushy or dominant. Not sure where you got that from, but we were talking about what can be done to keep her car running for the next few years we plan to keep it. A better oil was my suggestion, and she always comments on how smoothly/quiet my Trailblazer runs now that I switched to Pennzoil conventional.

It's second decade of the 21th century, not the 70's.

Conventional oil is much improved in 40 years, API SN oil can easily be in service for 7-8k OCI. This was/is my OCI in my 350+k miles 20 years old LS400 with dino, with syn I double the OCI, the engine has no lube related problems but other parts of the car are failing.

PU @ 3k would be a really big waste.

If she won't budge let her use what she wants. Autozone conventional.

This is a battle not worth fighting.

She's using a quality oil already, and insists on a 3K interval.

Mostly women are the other extreme, forgetting to change their oil for years (aka my wife)

You have a keeper.

Then, there's absolutely no reason to switch from conventional to synthetic (or a blend) or to switch brands.

I'm with Garak, at 3K, you can use any decent oil and the engine will be fine. Further, if she's sold on GTX, then you would be foolish to try and change her mind - what's more important to you: some trivial difference in oil performance? Or you respecting her opinion?

You're about to get married. Learn what's important. If she feels that you value her opinion, that you trust her enough to let her make decisions, then this will be a successful endeavor...but choose to pick at differences on minor issues (like oil brand), and you are going to make her unhappy...and your unhappiness will be even greater....

X1000000, besides how many women do you know actually care about what's going into the crankcase???

The fact that she knows what brand of oil she prefers is great!

Like others have said, it's not going to hurt anything running 3K OCIs with GTX ... except your wallet. With all those highway miles the oil should be good for at least twice that!

what about transmission fluid on the car?

Yes, what other maintenance has been done to the car? Esp, since it has 148k on it. Any other issues with it. I have an 05 Matrix with 72k.
