Hey,

So I just bought a '14 Silverado for almost nothing. (It's cosmetically totaled)

The 4.3 V6 specs a 5w30, what's something incredibly cheap, that meets dexos so I can run some short ocis?

I've never owned a Chevy that needed dexos, so I have no frame of reference

Most synthetics are dexos, so you don't have to worry :)

Even Walmart's house brand Super Tech 5w30 syn is dexos, but other oils could always go on sale or have a rebate promo

Supertech Advanced Full Synthetic 20,000 mile is Dexos, but for about the same price you can get Quakerstate Ultimate Protection 20,000 mile which is a good oil that I personally would choose over Supertech.

You can also go to GM Dexos website to verify if any oil is Dexos approved.

That’s a good point and it is actually what I did in my Civic. I had Supertech 20,000 mile formula in it and then switched it to QSUP.

Pennzoil Platinum before the $25 rebate ends on 9/30 would be a solid choice. About as cheap as you’ll find without waiting for sales or hunting around. Otherwise house brands like Supertech, NAPA, Kirkland and such are always reasonable options.

Our company has one of these at a nearby office that's soon to become our spare (they're selling the neglected 2010 Tacoma instead). Don't know the mileage but it has to be close to 300,000kms now. Wonder if the 5w30 spec has anything to do with these engines not being known for lifter failure like the 5.3 and 6.2?

Providence oils from Rural King. Why do you want to run short OCIs?

This is a direct injection engine based on the 5.3 and other Lt based engines. Plus he probably isn't sure about maintenance history. I'd assume that's why he's doing short ocis.

My question was what’s the point of short OCIs?
Inside of the engine looks cleaner - lasts longer - protects against wear when/where fuel dilution occurs.

Been doing 3k OCIs since 1970. My engines are / were pristine and I've never even had to change a valve cover gasket, pistons, lifters....etc... in the past 55 years. Nor have any of my engines ever ratted or smoked.
I would generally always donate them afterwards (around 20 years later), due to rust.

And many members here have done 10k oil changes for many decades too and had the same results (plus having saved more money too) I stopped doing 3k oil changes about 20 years ago and I have never had any engine problems.

Super tech or Kirkland signature synthetic oil.

Previous owner neglected it. The last time the oil was changed was 3 years and 1 months ago, and about 15000 miles

I have no idea about the oil change before that, and without an ouiji board, I can't ask

All of the fluids look like ass though

Is the OP's 4.3l V6 (in his '14 Silverado) the same engine in a '03 Chevy SUV?
It's based on a gen 5 ls design. Direct injection, oil squirters, aluminum block, displacement on demand, coil near plugs, the works, and it shows. It makes almost the same power as a 4.8 did

The old 4.3 is related to a 350 minus 2 cylinders.
The new 4.3 is related to a 5.3 minus 2 cylinders.

I dont think that generation of 4.3 had the AFM/DOD garbage that causes the lifter/camshaft failures
