what oil filter is currently the best ?

The O'Reilly microGuard select filters are almost always $10 a filter.

They only stock the most common filter out on the floor in that mid-level section by the oil. There's a significantly larger amount in the back of the store if you don't see it out on a shelf

PartSource OE+ Pro Series are Premium Guards. At least I can confirm that for 5.7 Hemi and for a 2.5L Ford Escape they are definitely Premium Guards. They are only sold at PartSource and not at Canadian Tire.

The OE+ sold at Canadian Tire are Champ filters.
I didn’t realize that PartSource had its own separate version, they typically just have the same stuff as CT. Good to know! (Although I get my Carquest Premium filters for $7.95 from the Carquest location beside my place)

any idea if the the Pentius PLXL7317 is better then the others? or is it the same as any other premium guard filter
they seem to advertise 99% at 20

I believe the issue with the Boss is that the filtration medium ‘pores’ are so uniform across the entire filter that below a certain diameter, everything goes through. Maybe the filtration medium has changed since the Ascend test. Build quality aside, I think the Purolator One changed frequently will catch more debris and be better for your engine. Extended OCI’s are bad. I do think the bypass filter design doesn’t allow the leaking that the Champ valve design allows.
If you look at the Boss filtering media under a microscope, the pores seem pretty cross hatched like many synthetic media.

Found these under the tree!! Full review and comparison to PG coming soon as they look identical.

Every time one of these "best filter" threads pops up, different filters are recommended. And people that don't know any better, like me, buy one (or three). Bought a Premium Guard recently, to go with my Fram Ultra Synthetics. Before that, it was Bosch Filtech and OEM.

Honestly, are there any truly bad filters? I get it that people running extended change intervals need good filters, but what about the rest of us?

All true. But we here have an advantage to most as we have a constant stream of c&p’s. We get to see the defects and ever changing QC on a daily basis.

i got a little confused, wondering if someone could help me. originally i was going to go with the endurance or the ultra as i assumed/read they had the valve leak issue. i then started looking at other filters and seems like tons of people recommend the premium guard

so i looked into the carquest premium 84356 but unless im mistaken this is a 99% at 30 microns,

i did some more digging and found the Pentius PLXL7317 which says 99% at 20 microns but not sure what test they used

premium guard PG4612EX says 99% at 25 micron but its also a smaller height filter compared to others

ecogard S4610 says 99% at 25 micron as well and about 3.43 inches so its taller then the original pg above

then randomly i did some more digging and noticed i missed over the fram force / tough guard which unless im mistaken are 99% at 20 micron as well. i don't believe there is that same leaky valve issue with these

unless im mistaken isn't it a no brainer to get the tough guard / force due to availability and price and spec? or did i make a mistake somewhere

Carquest is a store brand name sold by Advanced Auto Parts. They don't make filters, and I kind of doubt their parent has a design department that's world-class in filter design. I'm not saying their filters are bad, it's just that it's hard for me to imagine them standing out in the crowded field. And those advertising claims are likely just that.

Made by Premium Guard which has superior build quality currently. Especially compared to Fram, Champ, and M+H. The filter world has changed drastically.

Rather than "best," I'm going with consistently best-looking post use anecdotes here. Those look to be the PG and PGI made filters, e.g, PG XL, (AZ) STP XL (when made by PGI), Carquest Blue and Napa Gold. All of those use silicone adbv. They also make a less expensive tier using nitrile adbvs, fine 3-5k mi. max fci. Just me, I don't mind paying a bit more for silicone. There are other filters that are US made that 'I've' had excellent success with and all my c&ps confirm. That said, as I can't prove they are consistently in the PGI category, while I'll continue use, won't mention as an option. Right now, PG and PGI made look to be the safe best option.

Here’s the Pentius and CQP side by side for your application.

IMO, as of Dec 2024, this is the correct answer to OP's question, and the thread could end right there.

One question-- why do you always note "PG and PGI" filters? Aren't they the same thing? Or is there some difference between these two abbreviations that I'm not aware of?
